It's not unusual for many like him in the black communities who see that as a career choice....it's the only way they think they can get what they want materially. Getting an education to earn a living isn't what they're willing to put any effort or time in when selling drugs and criminal activity pays off immediately. , and they certainly understand the risk of jail/arrest for immediate gratification but they have no fear of prison. Prison is like graduating into manhood.
I do believe there are some people who will never change how they view life.....one of the leaders of BLm made it clear they want what everyone else (whites) have.....but he fails to understand there's a process of time, growth, investment etc. of ones-self to attain that, and measuring up to the standards.
