Up to three million Hong Kong residents are to be offered the chance to settle in the UK and ultimately apply for citizenship, Boris Johnson has said.
The PM said Hong Kong's freedoms were being violated by a new security law and those affected would be offered a "route" out of the former UK colony.
About 350,000 UK passport holders, and 2.6 million others eligible, will be able to come to UK for five years.
And after a further year, they will be able to apply for citizenship.
British National Overseas Passport holders in Hong Kong were granted special status in the 1980s but currently have restricted rights and are only entitled to visa-free access to the UK for six months.
Under the government's plans, all British Overseas Nationals and their dependents will be given right to remain in the UK, including the right to work and study, for five years. At this point, they will be able to apply for settled status, and after a further year, seek citizenship.
The PM said Tuesday's passing of a new security law by the Hong Kong authorities was a "clear and serious breach" of the 1985 Sino-British joint declaration - a legally binding agreement which set out how certain freedoms would be protected for the 50 years after China assumed sovereignty in 1997.
"It violates Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy and threatens the freedoms and rights protected by the joint declaration," he said.
"We made clear that if China continued down this path we would introduce a new route for those with British National (Overseas) status to enter the UK, granting them limited leave to remain with the ability to live and work in the UK and thereafter to apply for citizenship. And that is precisely what we will do now."

Our Marxists/commies get to live in a soon to be created commie hellhole (what they think of as heaven on earth) and Hong Kong residents who value freedom come here. It's a win win win win....
London and Hong Kong are two of the top financial centers on Earth.
This is a once in a generation opportunity to capture a pool of top flight human capital that is being displaced - and it just so happens to be a perfect fit for London’s specialty.
They should allow whole financial companies to relocate as a group, with their families.
The main thing though is to get the rich ones, and the top talent (who also tend to be rich).
The US needs to make a special offer to Hong Kong citizens to come to the US. ....................... The House will not approve of it. The senate might, but somehow the opposition will say its racist.
How many ChiCom spies will be among those admitted? Think it through, Brits.
A business owner I knew in Hong Kong set up a mirror company in Vancouver BC about 2 years before the 1997 take over. Nobody trusted the CCP then either.
There were a lot of others doing the same.
I understand that Vancouver BC has been nicknamed Little Hong Kong.
The second one. The value of Hong Kong is that it's a bridge to the economies of the west. If all the people that make that bridge function were to bail it would just be another Chinese ghost city full of empty high rises except these will be ones that actually used to generate wealth and prosperity.
WTF did you fidots give it away to begin with?
“Some one has to pay for the the freeloading Muslim pukes”
Depends what continent and lets say color.
My brother lives outside of Detroit/Dearborn and has many muslim clients. Muslims from ME are very hard working, strong business owners.
Somali or African muslims different story.
RE: WTF did you fidots give it away to begin with?
It was originally Chinese territory that the British forcibly told China to lease to them after the opium war (under the last Dynasty of China, the Qing Dynasty ). China leased HK to the British for 99-years in 1898. The UK was simply keeping her end of the agreement.
if these HK Chinese have learned anything from their PRC neighbors, they’ll be able to help defend UK from its (very dangerous) Muslim invasion
Does he sell a lot of mirrors?
If I remember correctly, part of the territory of Hong Kong was leased for 99 years and the other part was British with no time limit, but the British made both parts subject to the 1997 agreement.
I will be flamed here but I think Trump should make the same offer and grant speedy U.S. green cards and path to citizenship to long time legal Hong Residents via application at the American consulate in Hong Kong.
I'm sure I could find room to resettle a few of them.
Excellent strategy... Possibly killing two birds with one stone...
