My purpose in this article is not to compare white supremacy to homophobia. Nor is it to deny the existence of white supremacists. Instead, my purpose is to expose tactics of intimidation, shaming, and manipulation. In that regard, white supremacy is the new homophobia.
Allow me to explain.
The term homophobia can be traced back to George Weinberg, a psychotherapist who, in the mid-1960s, observed the discomfort that some of his colleagues exhibited around gay men and women and invented a word to describe it.
As Dr. Weinberg explained, I coined the word homophobia to mean it was a phobia about homosexuals. It was a fear of homosexuals which seemed to be associated with a fear of contagion, a fear of reducing the things one fought for home and family. It was a religious fear, and it had led to great brutality, as fear always does.
But in the years following, the terms homophobia and homophobe became weaponized, used as offensive weapons in the culture wars.
If you opposed same-sex marriage, you were a homophobe.
If you believed a child deserved a mother and a father, you were a homophobe.
If you affirmed the teachings of the Bible, you were a homophobe.
And if you were a homophobe you were also a bigot, a hater, a bad person, even a Nazi.
What fair-minded, decent person would want to described like that? And who wants to have a phobia?
Its the same today with the terms white supremacy and white supremacist.
Initially, they were used to describe people who openly believed in the supremacy of the white race over other races.
In American history, they were slave traders and segregationists. They were the KKK of the past and the alt-right of today. (According to the ADL, Alt right, short for alternative right, is a repackaging of white supremacy by extremists seeking to mainstream their ideology.)
White supremacists have also been antisemites, Holocaust deniers, neo-Nazis, and members of the skinhead subculture.
White supremacy is ugly and bad, and no decent, fair-minded would want to be called a white supremacist.
Thats why these terms, just like homophobia and homophobe, have been weaponized today.
If you are a Trump supporter, you are a white supremacist.
If you differ with any part of the BLM movement, you are a white supremacist.
If you resist the mob, you are a white supremacist.
If you dont believe in reparations, you are a white supremacist. After all, if you were not a white supremacist, why would you resist reparations?
If you dont agree with tearing down statutes of Washington and Jefferson, youre a white supremacist. After all, they owned slaves, so if you want to honor their legacy, you must be a white supremacist.
The logic is irresistible.
If you simply do not believe that America today is, by and large, a white supremacist nation, then you are a white supremacist. Your very denial of white supremacy is proof that you are a white supremacist.
And if you are a white Christian conservative, by default, you are a white supremacist.
On March 15, 2018, I tweeted, Im a little suspicious whenever left-leaning Christians raise charges against white evangelicals who just happen to be strong social conservatives.
In response, Ashton wrote, This political right-wing Christianity isn't Christianity. It's white cultural supremacy shamefully using Jesus as a shield. Repent @DrMichaeILBrown and @ericmetaxas. (For related accusations, see here.)
There you have it. If youre a Christian-based social conservative you are part of the political right wing. And if you are part of the political right wing, you are a white supremacist. And since you claim to be a Christian, you are using Jesus as a shield.
To be sure, this is just one tweet. But it expresses common talking points. And it follows the standard strategy of trying to shame ones opponents into silence.
In the recent past (and until today), the tactic was to brand everyone who opposed any facet of LGBTQ activism a homophobe. Do you have a problem with drag queens reading to toddlers? Youre a homophobe! You dont want first-graders learning the definition of gender-queer? Youre a hater and a bigot. Homophobe!
Now, if you like President Trumps Mt. Rushmore speech, its because youre a white supremacist.
Forget the fact that he said, We believe in equal opportunity, equal justice, and equal treatment for citizens of every race, background, religion, and creed. Every child, of every color born and unborn is made in the holy image of God.
Or that he said, Our opponents would tear apart the very documents that Martin Luther King used to express his dream, and the ideas that were the foundation of the righteous movement for Civil Rights.
Or that he said, We must demand that our children are taught once again to see America as did Reverend Martin Luther King, when he said that the Founders had signed a promissory note to every future generation. Dr. King saw that the mission of justice required us to fully embrace our founding ideals. Those ideals are so important to us the founding ideals. He called on his fellow citizens not to rip down their heritage, but to live up to their heritage.
It doesnt matter. The speech was delivered at the foot of Mt. Rushmore, a monument to white supremacy, by a white supremacist president. That says it all.
It doesnt matter that Trump said that we are the country of black heroes like Frederick Douglass. And the Tuskegee Airmen. And Harriet Tubman. And Jesse Owens. And Ella Fitzgerald.
Or that Trump announced that he will establish a National Garden of American Heroes, including leaders of the abolitionist movement and the first all-volunteer African-American regiment of the Union Army in the Civil War. Individual statues would be devoted to Douglass, King, and Tubman, as well as Jackie Robinson.
It doesnt matter. If you support this National Garden, you are a white supremacist. Obviously!
Along with other commentators, I have pointed to the current misuse of the term white supremacy. But its important that we compare it to the use of homophobia, which continues to be an effective tactic for labeling and silencing those who differ.
Lets catch this early. Lets expose it. And lets reserve the term white supremacy for those who deserve it.
Lol. Waaaaay too late for that.
We are decades past catching this early.
Homophobia is not an unreasonable fear. Sodomites will impose their filth or kill us if we disagree.
Gods created order, male and female, does not accommodate the deviancies worshipped by the left. The Bible condemns Sodomites to death. That law has not been repealed. Im not going to *correct* the Bible to have it agree with current so called social norms, Sean Hannity.
A new highly anticipated video game was released last month, and fans were absolutely horrified to discover it has the worst story ever written for a AAA game. It is called The Last of Us 2. In it, men are little more than fodder for two lesbians, the most bull of bull dykes you ever saw, and a confused young tranny. It has a strong anti-religion message too. It is vicious, ugly, mean and devoid of anything worthwhile. This is the Left's vision.
Although it sold well its first week, sales plummeted over 80% in its second week as gamer reviews everywhere were extremely negative. Naturally the company that makes it accused anyone who dislikes the game of being "homophobic" but that doesn't seem to carry the weight it once did, and the strong negative fan and reviewer reactions continued to pour in. So yes, the Left needs a new boogeyman, so "white supremacy" is it apparently.
How can I be a white supremist? I’m not even a Democrat.
If a white person is going to be destroyed as a “white supremacist” anyway, he might as well embrace the term.
It’s a common practice for groups to try to establish a new slur word, or attack word. They know the mileage race hustlers have gotten out of charges of racism over the decades , so they try for their own attack word.
There’s homophobia, xenophobia, misogyny, protectionist, restrictionist and others designed to demonize and avoid factual discussion of issues.
i remember one that never caught on when criticism of Japan’s trade practices heated up during the 1980s: Japan Bashing. That just never got any traction, but groups will keep trying to invent new ones to demonize opponents and control the political debates.
We should take a cue from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and wear big red “W S”’s around our necks and really give the snowflakes what they want. OOPS! I cited a literary work from a dead White guy! OH, MY!
What about Diana Ross and the high court? Nothing wrong with supremacy.
Ridicule (and its close sibling, Invective) is difficult to defend against. That is one of Alinskys Rules for Radicals.
We need to do better defending against all the lying slurs......we have a mountain to move with Big Media and Social Media all in on the Lefts talking points.
The only Caucasian male in the movie is a 70 year old Arnold. It's just another bullsh*t "Chick empowerment" flick.
Even the Nemesis is Hispanic.
The movie sucked.
Just checking...is it still OK to be a “black supremacist” or one of those dear pro Muslim agents?
Yes. And Jake, from State Farm is now a Black guy. Replacing White actors to be friendlier to BLM. This is where we are today.
A possible response to being called a white supremacist:
No actually I am a person of color supremacist. I believe that people of color are supreme over all other creatures on earth. White just happens to be one of those colors. So you and I and all white, black, brown and people of any other colors are equally supreme over all other creatures, as God intended.
How about we get some steak and eggs and talk about this more over lunch. You do know that everyone sits at the same counter now, as they always have during our lifetime?
The Internet kills PC movies today as well; after the first wave of dupes wastes their money, they go online and spill the beans - and the movie goes right to network TV...
It is more than that; companies advertise to whites and Asians online, while using TV to reach blacks, Hispanics, and women. It isn’t a technology gap (the latter have all the same devices, they just use them differently); it is a difference in how each group spends its free time.
How can I be a white supremist? Im not even a Democrat.
For that you get extra credit Master Keats !
The “Terminator” franchise was done with the second film, a feminist screed against men destroying the world.
These movies are now made focusing on the people who still have children (the target market); white people are targeted by pet food and life insurance commercials.
I saw a post on FR yesterday that straight white males are being discriminated against in Hollywood and can’t get roles anymore. Hollywood hates whites, straights, and males so much they will shoot themselves in the foot and come out with PC movies that suck and that nobody wants to see.
***I coined the word homophobia to mean it was a phobia about homosexuals.***
No one I know is scared of a queer. A better term that I learned from another FReeper is HOMOMISIA, a revulsion of all things homo.
Also works for Islamomisia.
