Explosion Reported as Firefighters Battle Blaze on Navy Ship (USS Bonhomme Richard)

An explosion erupted as a roaring blaze was reported on a military assault ship at Naval Base San Diego Sunday morning, according to authorities.

Plumes of smoke arose from USS Bonhomme Richard as firefighters battled the three-alarm blaze on the 3400 block on Senn St. The vessel is an amphibious assault ship homeported in San Diego, according to Krishna Jackson of Naval Base San Diego.

The ship had undergone a regular maintenance cycle before the fire was reported, Jackson said. Crew members typically are aboard the ship on weekends, but there are fewer than on weekdays.

Several sailors are being treated for injuries, according to the San Diego Fire Department. The extent of their injuries is unclear and authorities did not say how many sailors were injured.

It is unclear what sparked the fire.

USS Bonhomme Richard is roughly equivalent to the Chinese Type 075 landing helicopter dock.

One of those (under construction) caught fire in April, damage said to be minor:

“If it were BLM or Antifa, would they tell us? Probably not.”

So they’re just going to stroll onto a U.S. Navy vessel in their hoodies and masks?

Fire getting near the fuel tanks?

All of those ships near it look powered down and cold. Unless their crews are aboard or nearby, they can’t be powered back up easily, and even with a crash start with full crew aboard, it could take between 15 minutes to an hour or more to start from cold. The Burke class ships do not have the automation for an anchor watch to fire up and motor away without extra crew. The LCS is supposed to but there’s so much that doesn’t work on those ships.

Current word per scanner - fire has gotten to the ship’s fuel, everyone abandoning ship.

Why isn't the destroyer berthed next to BHR pouring water onto the blaze?

I can assure you that both DDG's on the pier, and probably additional ships, have sent teams over to help. There is installed firemain on pier 2, and teams might also have brought P100 firepumps to augment. It's possible that parts of BHR's firemain and/or other installed firefighting systems were undergoing maintenance, reducing the ship's firefighting capability. Despite all the conspiracy theories, we will eventually know exactly what happened, and how this fire got so out of control. People will be held accountable.

Someone’s career is over.

Or a contractor’s business or both.

Probably both someone’s Navy career, contractor’s business, and someone else’s career. I agree.

The ship is probably a total loss at this point. I can only imagine what it is like inside.

BHR was undergoing overhaul and rebuild to be able to carry F-35Bs. Not going to have many crew aboard.

Usually wouldn’t be in port with ammo except some small arm lockers for security.

No reason not to be, but one should keep their mind open - stupidity is at least as great a chance, if not more.

After this is over, some serious questions need to be asked as to why our major West Coast military port has such crappy firefighting provisions.

Likely solvents and lubes and paints on the hangar deck.

Just out of routine maintenance, no ammo aboard. Very little fuel.

They were likely preparing to paint. And a ship that size requires a LOT of paint and cleaning solvents and primer.

All oil based. And highly volatile.

I wonder why the ship on the other side of the dock doesn’t put out to sea.

Probably not enough crew present to bring it online, or if there is, they are frantically trying to get it to start. Warships do not start up like cars.

There did seem to be something that looked like a tug pulling alongside the DDG in the smoke, no idea if they’re hooking up to tow it away.
