I’m convinced they do the same with iMacs and MacBook Pros, etc.

Would not surprise me if they do. I don’t have an I phone but “smart” track phone sure slowed down and stopped working when it got about 3 years old. Its battery was fully charged when it quit.

Dead battery. Replace the battery.

Battery charge monitoring is based upon a table of voltage versus test results of remaining charge of a battery issued in new equipment. A more accurate determination is gained by testing under a specific output current loading of a battery. False charge levels will be reported under light loading..

With aging, the battery does not remain faithful to the test results of new batteries. The internal resistance often increases which limits the output current for a given voltage. The voltage will drop with an excessive level of current output. The electronic circuits will malfunction if the voltage dips below a certain level. Current draw is proportional to processor speed, thus throttling will lower current draw to a level acceptable for stable but slower operation.

This is analogous to the automotive headlights working fine until the starter motor is engaged, at which point they go dark. A weak battery can prevent a recent vintage automobile engine start, even though the engine rolls over. The electronic systems malfunction and will attempt a reboot due to transient insufficient voltage under high current (power) demand.

Apple can replace a product battery if so desired. As said, most people opt for a new device to get the new battery. This Pro Tablet will likely need a battery replacement at three to four years of service. Someone likely will do the math and give it a second term of service, relegating it to a mid-tier position, as four years of product improvement will have supplanted it’s prior position as the cutting edge product.

Operating system updates never fail to increase the background computing load upon older equipment. This burns through the battery capacity at a higher rate.

That can definitely work, however the micro-usb and even Thunderbolt (Apple style) connectors will fail after repeated use. Granted “repeated” means thousands of times, but when folks are keeping phones for 4 or more years, this failure does occur often on a long enough timeline. This is why I purchase wireless charging phones, which most of the newest models now support, and keep a wireless charging battery in my backpack.

Only problem I see with this is you can't both charge and use at the same time, which you can with the cabled battery pack. I assume that a wirelessly charged phone will also allow a cable connection (I've never looked into wireless charging as I have never had a cable problem)?? If so, that potential drawback goes away.
