KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — Former President George W. Bush on Friday backed Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine in his first public endorsement of the 2020 election cycle.

[Cut]

“She’s honest. She’s forthright. She brings dignity into a world that has gotten really ugly. The political world is uglier than I can ever remember it,” Bush said after he and his wife, Laura, had lunch with Collins at the family’s summer home overlooking the ocean. Bush called her “smart and capable,” “very influential” and “pretty darned independent.”

I’m not saying holding one’s nose and re-electing her is necessarily wholly bad. But having a whole Senate majority full of people like her is the same as having a Democratic majority.

Collins’ vote for Kavanaugh was predicated, as she said, upon assurances that he would not overturne Roe v. Wade.

Did I say anything about voting her out?

We’ve already seen what a RINO majority in the House did to slow down Trump’s agenda. Remember that.

Try supporting support for her through the election rather than discouraging Maine Freepers and guests.

Just give it a shot.

Voted for him twice. He sucked. Better than Gore or JK. But still a disaster on all counts. People can say he was garbage, because he was.

Who feels discouraged?

I can’t deny reality, notwithstanding.

Well said.

As this is a strong conservative site, many here often criticize various Republicans as being too liberal for their taste. I can appreciate that, however......

When we face a binary choice in a general election, what are they going to do? If Mainers don’t vote for Susan Collins, the alternative will be liberal Democrat Sara Gideon.

Another point, is that as participants in a strong conservative site, we collectively are much more conservative than the general electorate, and moreso than even most Republicans. But there aren’t enough of us to win elections on our own.

“With Senators like Collins, it’d be like there is no GOP majority.”

Without Senators like Collins, Trump would NOT have seated a SINGLE judge that wasn’t selected by the Democrats.

“What’s needed is more conservatives to outweigh people like her.”

That I agree with! Flip two more Supreme Court seats, and we will WIN virtually every case - even with Roberts still there with his anemometer.

Dude YOU are almost singlehandedly responsible for all this “ugliness” because you started a stupid war and then refused to defend America when the Democrats plundered it after your term!

So Clinton bombing an aspirin factory had nothing to due with the ugliness? Clinton’s quote dumbing down the populace had nothing to do with it?

I don’t defend Bush but war or not, it was expected as a pseudo-ally with Kuwait. Second, I would say more of the ugliness has to do with the Clintons than the Bushes. Have you heard one word of the Clinton’s denouncing the violence? Any demoncrap for that matter? To blame Bush for the singlehanded ugliness in this country is wrong. However we are too far removed from the Clinton Presidency to blame him for anything right?

Eww.
A hold-your-nose vote, but technically a Republican.

At this point, RINOs will have to do. We can’t afford to lose their seats.

Me too. I voted for him once. From now on, in God we trust. I’ll always for for the man not the outcome.

Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens

Agreed with both of you. I voted for this nebbish both times, but what other choice was there?

And yes, he (and his dad) is responsible for a lot of this. Neither of the Bush Presidents had enough spine to stand up for themselves, which led us to the Xlinton presidency, the 0bama nightmare, and almost plunged us into the final stages of socialism with Killary.

Shut up, W, and go away. You have no moral authority here, and no political capital. The Democrats always hated you, and your "base" mostly hates you, too. You squandered your presidency, and left us at the threshold of a never ending socialist nightmare.

The political world is uglier because of your friend Obama committing treason to over throw Trump.

You left out how he and his father honored Bill and Hillary with a big awards ceremony and very kind words.

This is good - a needed endorsement. Gritting my teeth and sending her money. Last thing we need is a Senate Leader Schumber. We will pick up Alabama. Let’s hold Colorado, Arizona, and Maine.

Look at how difficult it was to get Collins to vote Trump’s way, though. She certainly was not the most enthusiastic. If only it were a different situation, but at least she does so.

I agree, it’s tough for us to have to put up with her drama, especially with Kavenaugh, but then we are talking about Maine, not SC or AK, where they have RINOs also, but absolutely NO REASON for them, since those states would elect any decent Republican (which Maine would not).
