Trump says could 'decouple' and not do business with China

U.S. President Donald Trump, in a Fox News interview airing Sunday, raised the possibility of decoupling the U.S. economy from China, a major purchaser of U.S. goods.

In a video excerpt, Trump initially told interviewer Steve Hilton “we don’t have to” do business with China, and then later said about decoupling: “Well it’s something that if they don’t treat us right I would certainly, I would certainly do that.”

If he could that would be one of Trump’s greatest achievements.

Depending on China for anything that matters is a problem that needs to be fixed immediately.

It would take years to gradually decouple from China and not negatively impact the US economy.

The current supply chain for all levels of manufacturing is so reliant upon Chicom widgets that an immediate closure would be the biggest economic chaos this country has ever endured.

We did it to ourselves.

And we thought Fox News wasn't dishonest like all of the other cable news outlets...

“It would take years to gradually decouple from China and not negatively impact the US economy.”

The process started during President Trump’s first week in office. They started rotating groups of CEO’s through the White House, briefing them on the threat and the coming tariffs, telling them to prepare.

It was a big element in the re-working of all of our major trade deals (NAFTA, EU, Japan, Korea).

We are pretty far down the road now.

Boost those tariffs up and watch how fast the free market can move out of China.

A fairly speedy decoupling process would put the spurs to us to start producing useful things. Maybe that's what we need.

By the way, some of the coastal states here won't like it at all. They rely on imports too much. They'll foment more chaos and pump out more propaganda.

It's like saying the cash back on your Discover Card is a major income source while ignoring the fact that it is costing you much more in the long run.

When a person reviews how quickly the USA geared up production for World War II, I don’t think it would take that long to move manufacturing back over to the USA.

At one point, B-17’s were being built in multiples every day.

Well that gave the Democrats a central topic for farm-belt ads in places like Iowa and Minnesota.

I recall some comment from a German after the war. Something like “You would should down one of our planes and we were now down a plane. We would shoot down one of your planes and the next day there would be six in it’s place!”

The simplicity of manufacturing a lifetime ago can’t be compared to the complexity of it today.

What we really need is to go back to pre-1973 shunning of China.

The question is what does decoupling do to Chinese currency?

This sounds more like a currency war threat.

It’s Time for China to Pay Its Debts to the United States
https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/its-time-for-china-to-pay-its-debts-to-the-united-states

We could decouple and find China in default of some 750 billion dollars. And that amount is from 2011!
