How Not to Be an Antiracist: The focus should be on invidious discrimination, not statistical disparities and social change.
Wall Street Journal ^ | August 24, 2020 | Kenneth L. Marcus

Leaders in business, academia and government are increasingly adopting “antiracist” training and policies in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. In some cases, this reflects genuine interest in decreasing racial discrimination. In others, it is a salve for what Shelby Steele calls “white guilt.” Elsewhere, it arises from fear that even liberal institutions may otherwise become vulnerable to cancel culture. When properly conceived, antiracist programs can provide a powerful response to hate and bias incidents. The problem with much of today’s antiracism is that it doesn’t really oppose invidious discrimination and may even foment it.

The new antiracism is not, as its etymology suggests, opposition to racial discrimination. Ibram X. Kendi demonstrates this in his 2019 bestseller, “How to Be an Antiracist.” He defines “racism” as a combination of policies and ideas that “produces and normalizes racial inequities.” This racism has nothing to do with individual discrimination. Rather, it is support for institutions that yield disparities. Lest there be confusion, Mr. Kendi emphasizes that “focusing on ‘racial discrimination’ takes our eyes off” the policy goals he and other self-proclaimed antiracists support.

In other words, the new antiracism requires that we take our eyes off what antidiscrimination work is all about—combating invidious discrimination—and focus instead on social outcomes that arise in the absence of racial preferences. The results can be seen in the report I sent Congress last month on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. Over the past three fiscal years, OCR resolved 4,656 complaints against institutions, requiring them to redress discriminatory practices. This is 1,507 more than OCR achieved during the preceding three years under an administration generally aligned with antiracist thinking. In other words, OCR is now requiring far more schools to change discriminatory policies and practices.

Yep.

This phrase applies:

The left hates people but loves the masses.

The right hates the masses but loves people.

I’m finding myself becoming “more racist” towards blacks in general lately, but when I meet a black person one on one, it is not about the color of their skin. It is literally about the content of their character.

But you can’t watch all those videos of creeps like George Floyd without at least a small voice in your head saying, “why do black people have to be so damned emotional whenever they are confronted by cops - and rightly so?

George Floyd probably wasn’t a creep.

I suspect he was a dopehead.

Allow corporations to create self-sustaining Junkievilles in rural areas.

A black guy making a frantic dash for his car might have had 20 prison years of drugs in it.

Yeah. Creep was the wrong word. “criminally inclined” would have been better.

What happened to him is on him. And that is made crystal clear when one sees the full bodycam footage. Actions have consequences.

And he died, apparently, of a drug overdose, not the way the cops treated him.

School taxes should not be levied on an ad valorum basis.

Having Jane’s parents pay $8000 in school taxes and Jack’s parents pay $2000 in school taxes for the same schooling is unfair to Jane’s parents.

Joe Biden believed in living in an upscale house rather than investing in stocks of companies he would be regulating.

...focus instead on social outcomes that arise in the absence of racial preferences.

I am not really sure what this writer is trying to say, but if he is suggesting that it is ‘okay’ to fail English, father as many out-of-wedlock kids as you wish, and still expect to receive a lifestyle like Jeff Bezos, that just isn’t going to fly.

Thoughts?

“In other words, the new antiracism requires that we take our eyes off what antidiscrimination work is all about—combating invidious discrimination—and focus instead on social outcomes that arise in the absence of racial preferences.”

You can’t erase over 100 plus years of mistakes with violence. You can’t convert to a new way of thinking when there were two ways to begin with, and the violence, or threat of was the determining factor. There has to be OPEN dialog with the thought of compromise on both sides. And until neither wishes to conform to a profitable discourse, it isn’t going to happen. Complaints accomplish nothing. Factually, they convert more problems. Supporting one side or the other doesn’t achieve anything but pointed fingers. The hand has to be open. And that hasn’t happened for three generations and those folks weren’t prepared to repair at that time. And whose going to be the negotiators? I’m reminded of the delays as to what shape the table would be at the Paris Peace Agreements for months.

Some would say I’m being a complainer. I am. But, I do have a way to open dialog. And it isn’t a four letter word...it’s a five letter. Start with acceptance of the complete “truth” on both sides. Where is the first place you should look? At yourself and what you know, not what you are told. Then you are no longer looking at yourself. Perception is gray, truth is black and white, if it’s true. Then you have a starting point. As long as both sides are willing. Perception is not in the equation.

The author is saying that when the DOJ focuses on phony charges of systemic racism (based solely on disparate impact/results), then it can’t focus on real instances of individuals being discriminated against.
