The Great Boatlift of 9/11 became the largest sea evacuation in history..surpassing Dunkirk in WW2.
Nearly 500,000 civlians were rescued from the Island of manhatten by boat, (the only transportation in or off the Island), taking less than 9 hours..
People believed manhatten was under attack and didn't know when the next strike would occur...It was not until the 1st tower fell people panicked...
Coast guard sent a call out for boats to help rescue as people were actually jumping into the water to get off the Island....and a fitilla arrived as never seen before.....this is their story.

Yes it is, I think we’re all still a bit raw on this date...
I got chocked up watching the Boat Lift video when the captains started talking about how many boats sped thru the waters to assit, coming to the rescue so fast.
Thanks! “Grandpa...youre a great investigator too...cant believe we didnt know about this! So glad we got to see this...and I loved hearing how the boat owners just jumped to help.”
This makes the Dunkirk evacuation appear to be a smaller and well planned evac. Versus, this large and instant evacuation.
Yes...and Dunkirk took nine days...this was in 9 hours! even so there was a whole lot of water they had to travel to get to safety rather than just the other shoreline.
“I understand people didnt care where the boats were going - tey just wanted off the Island.”
But there was another side to it. A darker side. Ferry operators were asking for people who came in contact with all the dust to come on board first. The ones who scammed the system and came to the front of the line thought they were getting over on the operators. Once the boat hit Jersey, they were taken off the boat for decom.
I waited for hours to get on that boat.
I dont believe they closed the walking path on the B Bridge
