The Great Boatlift of 9/11 became the largest sea evacuation in history..surpassing Dunkirk in WW2.
Nearly 500,000 civlians were rescued from the Island of manhatten by boat, (the only transportation in or off the Island), taking less than 9 hours..
People believed manhatten was under attack and didn't know when the next strike would occur...It was not until the 1st tower fell people panicked...
Coast guard sent a call out for boats to help rescue as people were actually jumping into the water to get off the Island....and a fitilla arrived as never seen before.....this is their story.

My wife’s uncle walked across the Brooklyn bridge to get home in Queens.
A firefighter friend here on Long Island rode his motorcycle into Manhattan. Where roads were blocked by police they let him pass.
Well they did close the bridges so your Uncle was lucky.

Each year I look for coverage not seen before ....This Boat lift certainly was a surprise to me of how extensive it was not to mention the state of peoples minds waiting at the waters edge as frightened as they were.

I was part of that boat lift. Took ferry to Jersey City, got on board a train to short hills, a person walking his dog offered me a ride to the short hills Hilton and that’s where my wife picked me up a few hours later.
We are a great nation because of citizens like this.

It’s when our heros on 93 attacked the terroists in the cockpit.
I just found it last night......I never knew this happened to the degree it did. Stunning really!
Neither did I know until last night after finding it....just had to bring it here to FR because it needed to be seen by those who, like me, didn’t know.
Short enough you can view relatively quick but get the entire picture.

I understand people didn’t care where the boats were going - tey just wanted off the Island.
I never thought about the state of peoples minds regarding the idea they were truly fearful of another attack. But certainly seeing the tower fall and how it covered the Island...yep...that would have done it for me as well.

I will try to watch, to honor these brave souls. It’s just so heartbreaking, still.
Grandpa...you’re a great investigator too...can’t believe we didn’t know about this! So glad we got to see this...and I loved hearing how the boat owners just jumped to help.
