Revive the CCC camps. Put kids to work. They’ll get an education, free room and board and an adventure.

The CCC was a wonderful idea, but alas, times have changed. The big attraction of CCC was the food. The guys got fed lots of food to enable them to do the work. Most gained weight, nearly all of it muscle.

Despite the radio ads are people going hungry in the U.S.? Our local school district just announced that they will give ‘free’ breakfasts and lunches to anyone under the age of 18—students or not. Add on Food Stamps and no one will join a new CCC so they can get fed—especially if the price of getting fed is hard labor and discipline.

Misbehavior in the CCC was punished by expulsion—for a hungry, growing lad nearly a tragedy. I think the pay was the same as a private in the army—$16/month and most of that had to be sent home to the parents.

Picture 10s of thousands of today’s youth signing up for something like that.

They received $30 a month and $20 had to be sent home.
