Yep I wonder about that. The current Senate will be in office until Jan 3rd, and could hold hearings and confirm a replacement. Whether they will actually do that who can say.
I’ll bet that Trump names the candidate to fill the spot within five days though.

Republicans are too weak to ram a nominee through before November 3rd. The Dems would if they held the Senate. They’d just say, “Look, really important work needs to get done on the court, this can’t wait.”
Unfortunately; you are correct. The "bad optics" of replacing RBG so soon after her death right before the election will frighten the spineless senate republicans into submission.
We all know full well, it would be full steam ahead if the democrats had the white house and the senate. That is the key difference between the parties in DC.
The dems don't care about the optics, because they have the backing of the media to spin everything in their favor and the sheeple who take their cues from the media will simply accept the narrative presented to them.
