Romney supports vote on Trump's Supreme Court nominee this year, Mitch McConnell has enough votes to move forward with Trump's Supreme Court pick.

Washington — Republican Senator Mitt Romney of Utah indicated Tuesday he supports moving forward with consideration of a Supreme Court nominee during an election year, providing crucial backing to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as he proceeds with filling the vacancy on the high court just weeks before Election Day.

"The Constitution gives the President the power to nominate and the Senate the authority to provide advice and consent on Supreme Court nominees," Romney said in a statement. "Accordingly, I intend to follow the Constitution and precedent in considering the president's nominee. If the nominee reaches the Senate floor, I intend to vote based upon their qualifications."

Romney noted that the historical precedent of nominations made to the Supreme Court during an election year is for the Senate not to confirm the nominee put forth by the opposing party, but to confirm the pick of its own.

"My decision regarding a Supreme Court nomination is not the result of a subjective test of 'fairness' which, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder," he said. "It is based on the immutable fairness of following the law, which in this case is the Constitution and precedent."

Romney's support for proceeding with the confirmation process for a successor to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died Friday, provides McConnell with the backing needed from his party to move to fill the vacant seat swiftly. Just two Republican senators, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, have said they are opposed to confirming a new Supreme Court justice before the November 3 election. Four Republicans would need to defect in order to block a nominee.

This is CBS starting the campaign to make 2020 about this seat.

They are praying to their lord of darkness for this to be an election issue.

I expect that Trump knows it needs to get done BEFORE the election

RE: He says he will vote. But will it be a yes or a no vote.

Didn’t he vote FOR Justice Kavanaugh? Why would he vote NO for say, Amy Coney Barrett?

At any rate, there will be two abstains from the Collins and Murkowski. Worse comes to worst, if Romney votes NO ( unlikely ), The vote will be 50-47 in favor of whoever the Trump nominee will be.

Didn’t Graham say it would happen before the election? I know he’s not the decider, but thought he was pretty open about it.

Romney only said “he’ll vote.” Will Willard vote for Trump’s nominee?

Also, what does he want in return?

I swear, I will NEVER understand Never-Trumpers. Had they had their way, the Court would have been 6-3 Lib two years ago! And now Hillary would have cemented that with a young version of RGB, not to mention that Stephen Breyer is no spring chicken either. Think of a Supreme Court with six young Elena Kagans.

Never-Trumpers should get over themselves and look at the big picture.

He said he’d support a vote. Did he say he’d support the pick? I think not. He’s still a democrat snake until he proves otherwise.

RE: He said he’d support a vote. Did he say he’d support the pick?

Regardless, as long as he’s the ONLY ‘No’ vote on the GOP side, and Collins and Murkowski abstain, we have a 50-47 vote in favor of Trump’s pick.

President Trump nominates on Saturday, the Senate Judicial Committee gives her the OK without any hearing or meetings one hour after the announcement.

The Senate votes one hour after the candidate has been passed through the Judicial Committee, President Trump and juan roberts swear her in one hour after the confirmation.

All Sunday Talking heads {except Maria B} refuse to go on TV.

Suicides in Oregon increase 2,000% from Saturday to Sunday.

I will miss Mass this Sunday, due to alcohol poisoning, caused from drinking two fifths of 18 year old scotch and a fifth of Vizcaya VXOP Cuban Formula Rum.

After a stomach pumping, and three days of rehab, I will remember what I was celebrating, but can't remember how it went too far.

If it happens in that way, I hope to be back by at FR by the first of October, at which time, kojak will be celebrating another coupla of thousand deaths of 87 year old people that can be attributed to knowing anyone that knew anyone that may have had the chi-com virus.

Mittens afraid he’s being cut out apparently.

My initial reaction was to loathe him slightly less. But you are right; he is becoming more and more irrelevant as things are moving along without his support. And he knows it. This is a play to become relevant again. Therefore my degree of loathing stays unchanged.

As critical as I have been of Romney, he has been supportive of Trump’s court picks and I did not expect him to go back on that or the position of the Mormon Church.
