No, Judge No, Amy Coney Barrett Doesn't Belong to a Catholic Group That Inspired 'The Handmaid's Tale' Doesn't Belong to a Catholic Group That Inspired 'The Handmaid's Tale'

What would Americans do without our stalwart, truth-telling heroes in the press? Those diligent fact-checkers make sure we get the most accurate information possible so we can stay informed. And as we head toward the bitterest, most contentious election since the last one, with a vacant Supreme Court seat to make it even more interesting, we need the straight facts now more than ever. That’s why, when I saw Newsweek magazine promoting this story about possible Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, I had to know more:

Wow. What a scoop! But is it true? Khaleda Rahman, Newsweek:

How Amy Coney Barrett’s People of Praise Group Inspired ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

Amy Coney Barrett, a favorite to be President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, is affiliated with a Christian religious group that served as inspiration for Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, The Handmaid’s Tale.

Barrett, a devout Catholic, and her husband both belong to the People of Praise group, current and former members have said, according to The New York Times

Atwood herself has indicated that the group’s existence motivated her to write The Handmaid’s Tale, set in fictional Gilead, where women’s bodies are governed and treated as property of state under a theocratic regime.

Good work, Khaleda Rahman. I smell a Pulitzer!

Or at least that’s what her Newsweek story said yesterday. You can still read the original version at MSN. But when you read the story at Newsweek today, the headline has been changed: “How Charismatic Catholic Groups Like Amy Coney Barrett’s People of Praise Inspired ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.'” And all the way at the bottom of the story, there’s this minor correction (emphasis mine):

Correction: This article’s headline originally stated that People of Praise inspired ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. The book’s author, Margaret Atwood, has never specifically mentioned the group as being the inspiration for her work. A New Yorker profile of the author from 2017 mentions a newspaper clipping as part of her research for the book of a different charismatic Catholic group, People of Hope. Newsweek regrets the error.

Whoops! People of Hope, People of Praise, whatever.

Speaking of erroneous BS. Earlier this evening some Freeper posted without any source whatsoever, that the Judge that is said to be at the top of the Presidents list is a believer and practitioner of Speaking in Tongues.
The Freeper intimated that this will sink Barret’s nomination. When challenged by me for an authoritative source for the post I got crickets.
There are a good many people that oppose Trumps likely nominee for a myriad of reasons. Many of those reasons appear to be very dubious.

Judge Barrett has already been vetted, critiqued, scrutinized, and attacked by the Democrats during her nomination to the Seventh Circuit.

If this and her devout Catholicism were an issue, she would not have been confirmed for what is a judgeship just one notch below the Supreme Court.

I don’t think this will be an issue at all, otherwise they would have used it to derail her nomination then.

The GOP will spend the last 5 weeks of the campaign talking about religion.

Trainwreck.

Only to people like you and those from your neck of the woods. To the vast majority of Trump supporters, this will further reinforce his commitment to Christianity and to Christians. For those that put him in office in the first place, this is a Blessing and high motivation to see that the man gets 4 more years.

I think the “Hand Maiden’s Tale” tells you more about the Democrats than anything they want to point at. They are hung up on sex, substituting it for some quasi religious experience where they defy morality and their father — that oppressive patriarch — and the Father above (God). Yes, the Democrats have an issue with this tale and they keep pulling it out maybe thinking one day they will understand their attraction to it. It borders on neurotic hatred where the father should be in chains confined to a Burning Lake of Fire like Satan. The Democrats have issues with “freedom FROM”: Freedom from their dads. They can only destroy and not create, they are the barren ones not the women. Their lack of freedom from their fathers also demands that everyone not be free. This is a sordid Hand Wringing Tale and the Democrats are not Maidens. They are hen pecked husbands who want cuckoldry on every level, sex at every opportunity, as a religious escape from their oppressive “Puritan” dads. If the Democrats had freedom TO (rather than freedom from) they would be able to create, they would have freedom to chose creative options. Good grief, as it is they should get some counselling and save us, and themselves, from this tiresome embarrassment.

Leftists love dressing up like "the handmaids". It is almost like a cult. Supposedly the story line is that in the book, "the handmaids" would be the child bearers for society.

My conjecture is that the popularity of playing "dress up" fulfills a secret desire of these women to be impregnated and bear children. And why not? It is a natural desire for fertile young women.

Dressing up as "handmaids" helps them live their fantasy of having children and a family. In their social circles, expressing such a desire outside of costume would bring shunning, derision, and hateful reprisals.

IMHO, this whole uproar means that DJT should table Barrett and go with someone else.

We have one chance and only one chance to get an originalist on the court before the election. We all know that this is a red herring, but the RATs will seize upon it and turn hearings into a circus.

We are far better off to pick anyone else and start preparing the battlespace for Barrett during DJTs second term.

Sometimes life isn't fair, but we need to win this one.

If the RATs can prevent a confirmation it will be a blow to his re-election chances and quite possibly an opportunity wasted. Not a good thing.

Sure, be just like Republicans always are—crouch down with our tails between our legs, and lick the hand that beats us.

Uh, no thanks...

Doesn’t matter - they did their job. Now most of the Left permanently believes this.

Mitch ought to state that the Senate will only be reviewing information on Barrett’s rulings since her previous confirmation, and that all prior information has already been reviewed and will not be open for further questioning.

We knew several home schoolers in Illinois who belonged to “People of Praise”, and took our children to their Halloween parties a couple of times.

Frankly, they are lightly charismatic, intelligent, and generally pleasant and optimistic. A little more charismatic in orientation than I care for, but far from anything I would call extreme or cultist.

I’m surprised the article didn’t say this instead.

“Atwood herself has indicated that the Bible’s existence motivated her to write The Handmaid’s Tale...”

Those types of verses are in the Bible. I wonder how many of those ideas are also in the Torah, and were they brought up when Jewish RBG was nominated?

I am more in favor of the Judge from Florida. It is more for blatant political reasons over ACB...I have nothing against ACB, but being a deist —I am always a little wary of religious organizations anyway. That is me and no reflection what so ever on the qualifications any potential Scotus nominee.

“We all know that this is a red herring, but the RATs will seize upon it and turn hearings into a circus.”

And what is to prevent them from jumping onto another red herring for another nominee?
