Some Pa. counties will delay counting mail-in votes, potentially fueling challenges

York County election officials hope to count every available mail-in ballot and announce results before they go home late on Election Day.

Opening of mail-in ballots will begin at 7 a.m. on Election Day — the earliest Pennsylvania law allows. Mail-ins will then be processed by a sworn-in contingent of 75 people at a special location — being kept secret until Sunday — that allows space for social distancing.

It’s an expansion of the plan carried out during the June primary, when a contingent of 25 people processed 40,000 mail-in ballots, completing the task at about the same time as in-person votes became known. This time, the Republican-controlled county is prepared to count upwards of 92,000 mail-in votes.

“We figured triple the ballots, triple the effort,” York County spokesman Mark Walters said. “Our plan is to have them all counted on Election Day.”

Other counties are taking a different approach. In Cumberland County, officials don’t plan to begin counting mail-in ballots until 9 a.m. on the day after the election.

The ability to count mail-in votes by the end of Election Day or shortly thereafter may have major ramifications for the Nov 3. presidential election.

With the COVID-19 pandemic and a year-old Pennsylvania law making it easier to cast ballots by mail, there has been a historic surge in mail-in voting. It will pose a historic challenge in terms of counting them and reporting prompt results. More than 3 million voters requested mail-in ballots and about 2 million have been received.

Our primary concern involves three "shaky" states: Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Nevada. Lord, these are "shaky" because at the last minute conniving jurists have allowed to change their election rules; rules which will give time and place for cohorts for others to manufacture, discard, and alter ballots. Let not this evil occur; if attempted, may it only backfire. May you also deal with a heavy hand. those judges (circuit and supreme) that did so contrive.

Please bless our President at this time; help him overcome the evil forces arrayed against him. May his many scoffers and backbiters receive just retribution and be humiliated, especially those in the media. Grant him, we pray Thee, a powerful, sweeping election victory which brings both houses of Congress under his sway.
