Country Legend Charley Pride Dies of COVID-19 Complications at 86

Country legend Charley Pride — cited as an early pioneer for Black musicians in country music — died on Saturday in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 86 due to complications from COVID-19, a statement on his website confirmed.

With top hits including “Kiss an Angel Good Morning” and “Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone,” Pride became the first Black member of the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000.

He was born in Mississippi in 1934 as the son of a sharecropper. After a brief time serving in the Army and some unsuccessful attempts at becoming a professional baseball player, Pride headed to Nashville in 1963.

My mom, who had several health issues, passed away in a rehabilitation facility while it was on lockdown due to a rampant flu there (I was prevented from visiting a few days prior to her passing). Nowhere on her death certificate does it include the flu as a possible cause of death. Just saying.

His first couple albums they didn’t put his picture on the em. They finally did and no one cared what color he was. He was a great country singer and had an incredible personality. My mama loved him, saying “Lord he can sing good, and he’s the best colored man I’ve ever seen.”!!
