A Boeing 737 passenger plane carrying 62 people is believed to have crashed into the sea shortly after take-off from Indonesia's capital Jakarta.

The Sriwijaya Air disappeared from radars four minutes into its journey to Pontianak in West Kalimantan province.

It is thought to have dropped more than 3,000m (10,000ft) in less than a minute, according to flight tracking website Flightradar24.com.

Witnesses said they had seen and heard at least one explosion.

IIRC the 737 is the single most widely used of the major manufacturers’ products (meaning Boeing and Airbus). Add “Third World airline” and you have to expect an occasional incident.

What is it with Indonesian jets from Boeing falling out of the sky over the ocean?

Stock will no doubt plunge on Monday.

Boeing’s executive leadership has been absolutely horrible for the last 10-15 years. Most likely they have been focusing more on being politically correct (aka political appeasement) than actual engineering. There are lots of reports of the toxic culture at Boeing these days.

That was my question as well.

If it WAS a Max, Being is in REAL trouble. The ‘fixes’ were supposed to have eliminated the problems.

An old 737-500. According to flightaware was only in the air for about 4 minutes, turned right on-course, then crashed just offshore. ADS-B data can be suspect but showed pretty high climb rates(almost 4k/min.)before it fell like a rock(12k/min). Speed data seems low for that kind of drop, but again, it’s ADS-B data.

Maybe they should hire pilots that know how to fly a plane

Boeing needs to 'get with the program'... Pilot tests tend to leave out 'the stupid' the newest victim group.

All test should be thrown out for international flights...

The side benefit? White liberal 'elites' will have the extra excitement on not knowing if they're going to die in the first 30 minutes of their fancy trips....

already a thread

https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3923261/posts

and Boeing is not the problem. are you dim? these airlines do not operate properly and maintain their planes properly add that to the airport in that area has bad weather and doesn’t have the advanced radar first world airports have.

the airline that crashed today just was removed from the EU flight list after ten years because they were so bad.

this has nothing to do with the engineering of this plane.

sometimes the zeal to enter politics into everything makes people sound foolish.

The 737 Max is overpowered, and software solutions to the basic hardware problem won’t cut it... this is basic engineering. They need to scrap the thing and design a new aircraft, but I doubt that they’re smart enough to realize that.

That plane has been flying for a long time with no issues.

You have no idea why most planes crash. Educate yourself.
It’s airlines 99.99% of the time who do not have competent trained pilots who are kept up to speed on new technology and new procedures. these janky airlines in some countries have bad and lacking maintenance to save money.

You can’t screw around with these sorts of things for too long with having a plane ditch in the ocean.
