British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the B.1.1.7 variant of COVID-19 which was said to be 50% to 70% more contagious, has now been discovered to also be 30% deadlier. The CDC warns it could become the dominant strain in the US by March.
The UK's chief scientific adviser, Patrick Vallance, broke it down this way, according to CNN. “If you took... a man in their 60s, the average risk is that for 1,000 people who got infected, roughly 10 would be expected to unfortunately die with the virus. With the new variant, for 1,000 people infected, roughly 13 or 14 people might be expected to die.

I e seen plenty of young healthy people get very ill and even die from this. Yes it’s mostly older folks but the youngsters can do poorly as well
New release would be my guess.

The 2019 releases failed almost completely. That's why they called it COVID-19 to distract from the fact that many of the 2020 releases were much more effective.

Who knew that all it would take to conquer the west was a flu virus with a scary name.
The cure is way worse then the disease. Not only are they destroying economies, they are destroying lives. But the worse thing is that governments are assuming more power and control over the people then it is safe for them to have.
I’m no virologist or immunologist or epidemiologist but I understand that viruses do mutate and this one basically has two directions it can mutate. In one direction, it gets a whole new spike protein that recognizes a new cell receptor. It basically becomes a new virus. I think if it does this, it had help. In the other direction, it modifies itself to have an increased affinity for the current ACE2 receptor. This increased affinity will certainly make it more contagious as it will decrease the already low infectious dose threshold. A more contagious virus is, in and of itself, deadlier because it reaches more susceptible hosts. The questions are, how much further can it mutate in this direction and at what point does the vaccine stop conferring immunity to the mutating virus? The good news is, mRNA vaccines are cheap, easy, and highly adaptable. It’s the perfect weapon against a rapidly mutating viral pathogen like this IMHO.
One infantryman to another, I respectfully disagree with you. This is not the flu. I’m an ER nurse in a city that actually lead my state in Covid deaths for the first 6-7 months of this pandemic. I’m eyeball deep in this battle and have been for almost a year now, I’m going to have to defer to my own knowledge and experience with this. Similarly, I would never ever tell you what the Vietnam War was all about.
