New Jersey district pays $325K in Trump yearbook censorship

A New Jersey school district is paying $325,000 to a former New Jersey teacher who claimed she was forced to digitally edit a Donald Trump T-shirt worn by a student in a yearbook photo.

The Wall Township school board approved the settlement agreement with Susan Parsons on Tuesday, NJ Advance Media reported. The district made no admission of wrongdoing or liability. The money will be paid by the district's insurance carrier.

Parsons was the high school's yearbook adviser when she said a secretary acting on behalf of the principal ordered her in 2017 to remove "Trump Make America Great Again” and make it appear as if the student was wearing a plain navy blue T-shirt.

"That has to go,” the suit alleged Parsons was told.

Parsons, who said she voted for Trump in 2016, said she was made a scapegoat and received death threats. She was suspended with pay after the incident. She claimed she regularly complained about being forced to alter photos.

Parsons will receive about $204,000 and the remainder of the settlement will cover attorney fees, according to the agreement.

The school district reissued the yearbook with the original unaltered photo.

Just a bump in the road. If the Dems have their way, suits like this will soon be summarily dismissed.

The sad part is that this is taking money from taxpayers, some of whom might actually be Trump supporters.

So the victim gets nothing while the union drone gets 200K?

What a nice justice system we have here

She did follow the orders of the principal, she is no more a victim then the school district is.

Schools and universities should be forced to be non-political like they used to be. Political views should not be part of the curriculum and teachers should not be able to bring their political views to the classroom.
Obama turned schools into political brainwashing systems. Hillary advocated the same.

Interesting. I wondered if she may have sued for a hostile work environment rather than some 1A violation. Sure enough, when you click on the link in this story to an earlier AP report, it does indeed say that it was a hostile work environment action. Apparently, when the edit became known, the school district suspended the teacher...who was told to make the edit...essentially making her the fall guy for public outrage. What pricks.

I can see why they settled for a significant chunk of change. They were going to lose, for certain, and depositions and a trial would have likely aired a TON of dirty laundry.

Under existing Supreme Court precedent, schools have a scary amount of latitude when it comes to constraining the 1A rights of students.

Just a couple years ago, the Court refused to hear a case out of California brought by some high school kids who weren’t allowed to wear or display the American flag while at the very same time, Mexican kids were allowed to wear and display the Mexican flag. Even though it’s about a clear a case of 14A and 1A abuse you could think of, they lost and the 9th Circuit affirmed the District Court decision. The Supremes refused to grant cert.

Ah, yes! Attorney fees. Our government is run by lawyers for the benefit of lawyers. Legislatures & judges ensure that cases are postponed, delayed, appealed, etc to ensure Full-Employment and Maximum Billable Hours for their fellow members of the Bar Association.

The pendulum will surely swing. If this sort of thing happens to you, document everything contemporaneously and make note of witnesses; invest in legal help. Make them pay. KA-CHING.

Wall Township is fifteen minutes north of me. Wall Twp. is nice, very nice. Very upscale, affluent, big homes, horse farms(’’equestrian riding schools’’) and liberal as all get out.

Good job kid. Make ‘em pay.

The victim (the kid) wasn’t part of this lawsuit. This was the lady who did the alterations seeing the school for forcing her to do them. She is the victim in this suit.
