Inside a tiny prison cell in Iran, an expert on disaster medicine and a citizen of Sweden named Ahmadreza Djalali is dying.
At least, what is left of him is dying. This innocent man has spent four months in solitary confinement on a daily ration of 100 grams of bread. His possessions consist of a thin blanket and a picture of his wife and their two children. A prison photo of Djalali resembles a survivor of Nazi concentration camps.
Djalali’s jailers have made it clear to his family that he will die unless Belgium agrees to swap him for Assadollah Assadi, a senior officer of Iran's civilian intelligence service. Assadi, who worked undercover as a diplomat at the Iranian Embassy in Vienna, served as the operational commander for a foiled plot to bomb a Paris rally by exiled Iranian opposition groups. The spy is serving 20 years in a Belgian prison for his role in that terrorist plot. If successful, the attack might have killed hundreds, including Americans such as Rudy Giuliani who were in attendance.

There’s a point of no return when the body doesn’t get enough nutrition for long enough, so that even if you start to eat a full, nutritionally adequate diet, it’s too late.

There are several eventual solutions to this kind of behavior. We in the West have to realize that the Iranian culture has been a hostage taking culture for thousands of years. That’s how they operate. BTW, that is the largest danger of Iran getting nukes. It’s most likely that they will not deploy them in missiles. They will, instead, move them onto the target country either in pieces and assemble on site, or in shipping containers. They will surround them with barrels of dirty bomb chemicals, like, say, cobalt. This will not only make them far deadlier, but poison the land effectively forever. Let’s say they buried a remotely controlled bomb in the heart of the Midwest farm belt. Or, of course, cities. I’d say the probability of this happening is very high.
You might say that, well, if that happened, they’d be nuked. I don’t think that bothers them as much as, say, sane people. The former president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, began and ended every speech with a prayer for the return of the Mahdi*. That’s the Muslim equivalent of the Apocalypse.
Think back, the Iranians have held a former FBI agent until he died and that was recent. They have taken idiot westerners who hiked too close. They have held hostage ordinary citizens for political leverage.
The Western world needs a uniform response. No matter who the person is, the Western world needs to react in the strongest way that hurts the regime holding the prisoner. (I think there are different elements in the government that do not have any control over other elements. There are, for example, two different militaries. I suspect that they are under different commands and could, possibly, end up fighting each other. Their system is nothing like ours.)
Unfortunately, in this instance, the US is withdrawing from its position on the world stage. This is both good and bad. Frankly, as the American government I’d forbid travel to places like North Korea, China, Iran, and probably a host of other countries that have no rule of law.

People are constantly moving to Iran. And then the torture for prisoners exchange happens. How stupid are these people to go to Iran. And yes I am very saddened that they are being destroyed by the evil Iran Gov. Yet they keep moving to Iran. Insanity is difficult to explain.
