As massive ship remains stuck in the Suez Canal, signs of global economic toll emerge

CAIRO - A giant container ship remained wedged sideways in the Suez Canal on Friday as signs of its potentially huge global economic toll emerged with shipping rates rising and cargo ships being rerouted away from the vital waterway.

The Ever Given, a Panama-flagged vessel whose length is nearly the height of the Empire State Building, has been stuck in the canal since Tuesday, creating a massive traffic jam on both sides of the waterway that connects Asia to Europe.

On Friday morning, the canal’s service provider, Leth Agencies, said in a tweet that the Ever Given “remains grounded in the same position” with tugboats and dredgers working to “refloat” the vessel, which is blocking the flow of an estimated $12 billion in goods.

With some experts predicting that freeing the ship could take weeks, some global shipping companies on Friday began seeking alternative routes for their cargo.

At least seven tankers carrying liquefied natural gas were diverted, including three steered toward the longer route to Europe via the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa. Another nine more tankers are expected to be diverted if the blockage continues into the weekend, an analyst for data intelligence firm Kpler told the Guardian newspaper.

At least four long range oil tankers with the capacity to haul 75,000 tons of oil are also possibly headed around the Cape of Good Hope, London-based ship brokering firm, Braemar ACM told Reuters, adding that shipping rates have nearly doubled this week “as the market starts to price in fewer vessels being available in the region.”

Ship names are on the back of the ship. The company names are usually down the side. Seriously, this is still being questioned??

NO kidding! Id this was Alabama, that rig would already be out with 100 4-wheelers tugging on it! “Heck, my RZR could tug that in a minute!”

Sailing under Panama flag, but Evergreen is a Chinese Company. Maybe Mitch’s wife is a partial owner. I think she is associated with a different shipping line.

Is the price of bananas soon to skyrocket, I wonder?

We had runs on toilet paper down here in F'n Illinois B@stard land today ... Apparently that ship had the worlds supply of toilet paper on it?

It is built with locks that they can fill and drain. I say add water to make it wider and maybe bring a dredger and make the channel deeper.

Unlike the Panama Canal, the Suez is a “flat” canal with no locks. It’s one of the features that makes it a more attractive route for shipping.

Agree on that one. I had the frustration of trying to keep an LPA (the modified ex USN LST USS Fairfax County) running straight and slow for an anchorage approach with a 40+ wind on the beam.

I’ve also had the unpleasant experience of loosing all power on said same ship and watch as we start drifting back towards the breakwater we had just cleared. Thankfully the tugs returned in time and kept us of the rocks long enough to restore power.
