As massive ship remains stuck in the Suez Canal, signs of global economic toll emerge

CAIRO - A giant container ship remained wedged sideways in the Suez Canal on Friday as signs of its potentially huge global economic toll emerged with shipping rates rising and cargo ships being rerouted away from the vital waterway.

The Ever Given, a Panama-flagged vessel whose length is nearly the height of the Empire State Building, has been stuck in the canal since Tuesday, creating a massive traffic jam on both sides of the waterway that connects Asia to Europe.

On Friday morning, the canal’s service provider, Leth Agencies, said in a tweet that the Ever Given “remains grounded in the same position” with tugboats and dredgers working to “refloat” the vessel, which is blocking the flow of an estimated $12 billion in goods.

With some experts predicting that freeing the ship could take weeks, some global shipping companies on Friday began seeking alternative routes for their cargo.

At least seven tankers carrying liquefied natural gas were diverted, including three steered toward the longer route to Europe via the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa. Another nine more tankers are expected to be diverted if the blockage continues into the weekend, an analyst for data intelligence firm Kpler told the Guardian newspaper.

At least four long range oil tankers with the capacity to haul 75,000 tons of oil are also possibly headed around the Cape of Good Hope, London-based ship brokering firm, Braemar ACM told Reuters, adding that shipping rates have nearly doubled this week “as the market starts to price in fewer vessels being available in the region.”

Land-based winches and steel rope properly placed should do it.

The operating company is Evergreen; the individual ship’s name is Ever Given.

I think Evergreen is the shipping line and Ever Given is the ship’s name.

The potential for piracy is rising fast. I wonder who diddled the steering via hacking, to shut down the Suez so more vulnerable routes would be used??? What a great opportunity for the English Navy to make themselves useful!

The ship is called the Ever Given. The shipping company that owns it is named Evergreen.

I’m surprised we haven’t seen them add that yet. If not steel rope, then use very heavy duty anchor chains.

too heavy and may tip.
too deep. too narrow.

white hats on the left.

three months to deload by copter
and then charge all involved for the missiles,
trafficking people, drugs, gold and uranium.

That ship loaded with all those containers is one big ass wall. You throw enough wind at it’s broadside, it’s gonna move. Even if they did engage bow thrusters, I doubt they had enough thrust to make a difference in a narrow channel to keep it away from the bank.

At this point I’m willing to give the pilot and the steering the benefit of the doubt.

You said what I have thought of. Several heavy duty Caterpillars on tracks and on land with heavy cable hitched at the right place should be able to point this vessel in the right direction. Well so much for the thought.....At least I wasn’t the only one who thought of it.

Is the price of bananas soon to skyrocket, I wonder?

How the HECK can they come from so far away and only cost me 39-cents per pound as it is?

They probably do not have quick access to the equipment needed. I bet mass improvements are to be planned. Look what it has cost to be unprepared.
