(CNN)The number of new Covid-19 cases has plateaued at a "disturbingly high level," and the US is at risk from a new surge, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned on Wednesday.
While lower than the peak earlier this year, there were still more than 61,000 new cases reported on Wednesday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. And the lack of continued significant decreases in infections is a concern, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases told CNN's Anderson Cooper, particularly given the spread of variants.

No surge, the data and science suggest a brief leveling due to younger folks testing positive with little or no symptoms and will soon drop off again as we continue to vaccinate 3 million people/day indicating herd immunity is only 6-8 weeks away.

Just maybe 60000 new cases a day in the US is the new norm for the virus. Covid-19 is not going away, it will be like the flu. We will have Covid for the next 1000 years. We just have to accept the human average lifespan will be 76 instead of 79.
