Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Florida’s controversial “anti-riot” bill into law on Monday, a measure that vastly increases law enforcement’s powers to crack down on civil unrest.

The bill, which passed mostly along partisan lines, has been criticized by Democrats and civil rights groups as unconstitutional for infringing on the First Amendment’s right to protest.

“If you look at the breadth of this particular piece of legislation, it is the strongest anti-rioting, pro-law enforcement piece of legislation in the country,” DeSantis said at a press conference in Winter Haven surrounded by Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, uniformed deputies and other law enforcement. “There’s just nothing even close.”

There is nothing “controversial” about it.

The bill of rights recognizes the right to PEACEFUL assembly, not rioting, criminal acts and general mayhem.

Anything a republican does is controversial in the eyes of the biased media.

So tired of fighting the uphill battle over use of terms.

Seems public safety is not a two way street. You can infringe any right to slow COVID but looting is a right that can’t be abridged for safety.

LOL. Now the Left wants to pretend rioting, vandalism and assaults are “First Amendment” protected.

has been criticized by Democrats and civil rights groups as unconstitutional for infringing on the First Amendment’s right to protest

A riot is not a peaceful assembly.

Democrats and civil rights groups as unconstitutional for infringing on the First Amendment’s **right to protest**.

Riots are not protests looting isn’t shopping arson isn’t a cook out.
Liberal spin is for the simple minded.

De Santis is heading off the BLM/ANTIFA coming attacks in Miami /Dade. The Alinsky Left is tying to destroy the overwhelmingly successful patriot DeSantis. He is in their way.

I expect that any looters or arsonists who try to ply their crimes as protests ion Florida will be shot in the course of their crimes.

Ask me. do I have a problem with this? ( Grin).

Most Americans are ignorant of the fact that up until the 1960s, many states had civil liability laws forcing cities to compensate private property owners whose property was damaged by riots.

It was done under eminent domain laws - recognizing that riots and work of police are government responsibilities, property that is “taken” illegally through riots is is ultimately due to government inaction - “inverse condemnation.”

When progressives took over American government, particularly American cities in the 50s and 60s, these laws were eliminated.

I’d like to see a law that lets the common man shoot looters and collect a bounty afterwards. Of course proving they were looting before you shoot them would be part of the law.

There are a number of Sheriffs in the State of Florida for whom this new law is not good news. I could name at least one but then I might get put on someone’s list. Like I’m not already. I have complained so much and for so long on the blatant lack of law enforcement in our county. They all know me by name.

If Maxine disagrees with it, that makes it “controversial”. ;)
