Speaking earlier retired US Navy captain and now defence consultant Carl Schuster demanded Western patrols sail to the South China Sea to hold back the Chinese navy. On Friday, President Xi Jinping launched the Hainan, a type 075 amphibious assault ship that will be deployed in the South China Sea at a ceremony in Sanya, in the Hainan province. The new ship, which is now China's largest assault ship, marks Beijing's most 'ambitious' amphibious assault ship with an estimated displacement weight of about 40,000 tonnes, according to reports.
According to the South China Morning post the ship can carry an estimated 30 helicopters and hundreds of troops.
The Hainan 31 is China's first Type 075 amphibious assault ship capable of transporting almost the whole of the Chinese Marine Corps with the ability to land them in hostile territory via landing craft or helicopters as well as providing air support.
It has a full-length flight deck for helicopter operations and features a 'well deck' where hovercraft and armored amphibious assault vehicles can disembark from inside of the ship to launch an attack.
Military experts have suggested the deployment will cause concern with Taiwan and other countries in maritime disputes with China in the South China Sea.

Before the yelling begins, yes China will defeat Taiwan, no matter what, they will spend whatever currency they need to; people, treasure, morale, foreign goodwill, etc., to take Taiwan.
However, that ship and any other will end up at the bottom of the straits because Taiwan has a whole lot of anti-ship missiles and will sink a whole lot of ships. They also have some longer range missiles and Three Gorges Dam is a very tempting target.
China will(IMHO) not do this. They will make the leadership and people an offer they can’t refuse, and take it peacefully, just like Hong Kong. Maybe an autonomous region for the lifetime of the people there, and then full control over the next generation.

Step back for a moment and analyze the problem of landing PLA troops in Taiwan. The use of amphibious assault ships would be many steps downstream from an initial invasion.
Meanwhile, communist China continues to build on its increasingly close military alliance with Russia, the two having carried out numerous large-scale joint war games over the past 15+ years. The larger alliance includes, China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela, North Korea, Syria, Cuba, other hard left regimes.

It seems to me that for purposes of invading Taiwan, Red China would be better off building thousands of small landing craft that can make the entire 100-mile journey on their own, than a few massive ships like this one.

They can build lots of shiny landing ships. But getting them across the straits of Taiwan are another matter.
