Lin-Manuel Miranda Promises To ‘DoBetter’ After ‘In The Heights’ Cast Call OutColorism In Film
Hollywood Live ^ | 06 15 2021 | Eric Todisco

Lin-Manuel Miranda, 41, is promising his fans that he will “do better” as his new movie In the Heights is facing backlash. Lin-Manuel, who produced, wrote the music/ lyrics, and starred in the new film, an adaptation of his beloved Broadway production, shared an apology on Twitter on Monday, June 14 after the film’s director and two cast members spoke out in a recent interview about colorism issues in the movie.

In his statement, Lin said, “I started writing In The Heights because I didn’t feel seen. And over the past 20 years, all I wanted was for us-ALL of us-to feel seen. I’m seeing the discussion around Afro-Latino representation in our film this weekend and it is clear that many in our dark-skinned Afro-Latino community don’t feel sufficiently represented within it, particularly among the leading roles. I can hear the hurt and frustration over colorism, of feeling unseen in the feedback. I hear that without sufficient dark-skinned Afro-Latino representation, the work feels extractive of the community we wanted so much to represent with pride and joy.”

The Tony-award winner conceded that while the newly-released film was “trying to paint a mosaic of this community,” it “fell short.” He also said he was “truly sorry” and “learning from the feedback” of the fans. “I thank you for raising it, and I’m listening,” said Lin. “I’m trying to hold space for both the incredible pride in the movie we made and be accountable for our shortcomings. Thanks for your honest feedback. I promise to do better in my future projects, and I’m dedicated to the learning and evolving we all have to do to make sure we are honoring our diverse and vibrant community.”

“ The trio all discussed the lack of Afro-Latino and Black Latinx in the film, which, despite the backlash, has received rave reviews from critics following last week’s theatrical release.”

Democrats are racists.

Plain and simple.

The only tiny solace I ever take from the cancel culture is watching them turn on their own.

I found this definition:
"Colorism," the idea that light-skinned minorities are given more privilege than their darker-skinned peers, is a centuries-old concept that many insiders say remains pervasive in the entertainment industry.
My rascist Grandfathers generation (he was born in 1907) thought the best Black person was the darkest because he could never pass for white.   Charley Pride gave him a conniption fit!   Finally and thankfully in our enlightened modern times the light skinned is the best Black person.

Woops, us Whiteys got it wrong again.   We now find out the lightest Black person is not the best.   My rascist Grandfather was right, and the Blackest is the best I guess according to "Colorism."   Full circle fools, us all.

If Melissa and Leslie are so concerned about the lack of darker skinned Hispanics being in the movie, they certainly could have given up their starring roles.

Whelp! There's another "beloved" entertainment product I never heard of. Hold muh beer while I go hang my head...and laugh my butt off.

Colorism runs _very_ deep in all elements of life, and it has been that way for centuries.

Light-skinned blacks had more status than dark skinned blacks, and the marketing community quickly figured out that lighter skinned blacks were better received (in advertising) by both whites and blacks.

That is why most blacks you see on TV (whether in programming or advertising) are light-skinned.

In addition, lighter skinned blacks have had more social mobility than dark skinned blacks across the board.

The deeper question (that will _not_ be discussed out loud by anyone in public life) is whether the lighter skinned blacks have higher IQs than dark skinned blacks.

This whole area is _very_ touchy, and the left is stepping on land mines if they go there.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious and it is sad. It’s not too woke and politically correct to acknowledge at least that.

I started noticing the “colorism” issue in my “fancy” college where almost all the black students had very light skins (except the ones from Africa).

I saw it again in the workplace in the management ranks.

Then I started noticing it on TV and started researching it further.

It is a truly “taboo” topic for everybody, black and white, but once you notice it, as you say it becomes obvious.

One other thought—the most nefarious aspect of colorism has been affirmative action programs because of course they do not distinguish between dark skinned and light skinned blacks.

In this case I think the liberal whites who designed the program were totally clueless on the subject.

Meanwhile the institutions met their quotas while continuing to discriminate against dark skinned blacks.

While normally I like to beat up in Wikipedia, they did a solid job with this article:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination_based_on_skin_color

Colorism is not just about blacks—it is a world wide reality across many races and is a highly complex (and fascinating) topic.

Everyone needs to submit their 23-and-Me genetic results for a determination of their Afro-Latino status.

It was a revelation to me when I learned that the light skinned Blacks were mistrusted by the actual White Supremacist racists of a couple of generations ago because light skinned Blacks could possibly pass and fool the actual White Supremacists.   That indicates that there are almost no dyed-in-the-wool White Supremacists left in the country.   I thought back then, fifty years ago, that all we had to do is let them die a natural death and racism would die too.   The race hustlers would not let that happen.
