“You Didn’t Build That” ...Actually You Did
Townhall.com ^ | July 4, 2021 | Jeff Davidson

Posted on 07/04/2021 4:46:13 AM PDT by Kaslin

During his eight long and painful years as president of the U.S., Barack 0bama uttered a bewildering array of mind-numbing statements. Nine years ago, on July 13, 2012, in Roanoke, Virginia he offered a humdinger. He said: "Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business, you didn't build that."

The GOP rightfully leaped on his last sentence and attacked Obama’s views on business and industry. Democrats quickly responded that Obama’s words were intentionally taken out of context, claiming that the word "that" within his last sentence referred to the development of "roads and bridges" in the prior sentence.

Individual Effort and Entrepreneurial Initiative

In lockstep, the mainstream media insisted that successful business owners, as 0bama vigorously asserted, were indebted to our national infrastructure. Isn’t that the case in any prosperous nation?

Tax-paying, job-creating, product- or service-providing entrepreneurs don’t get into business where roads are poor, transportation is limited, and utilities services are unreliable. As Joe Biden’s bungling, bloated government intrudes into the lives of each of us, more so, each day, it is increasingly apparent that individual effort, entrepreneurial initiative, corporate excellence, and all of the smarts that we can bring to the marketplace help to strengthen our society.

If you're a business owner, or someone who supports a small business, our hats are off to you. You did build that and you contributed to society in ways that Barack 0bama, Joe Biden, and swarms of swamp-dwelling career politicians will never understand, or even attempt to understand.

The major fallacy with 0bama’s viewpoint, and all those on the Left who support it, is that while the government built the roads, public schools, and so forth, one would have to conclude that individual effort and entrepreneurial initiative count for little, and that government is behind everything. How lame.

Raising Above

Some people have stood out in ways that the masses can never emulate. These individuals essentially traveled on the same roads, attended the same schools, were taught by the same teachers, and then excelled to an amazing degree. Consider Thomas Edison, Charles Kettering, Wilbur and Orville Wright, William Boeing, Marjorie Post, Philo Farnsworth, and even Steve Jobs.

Since at least the time of the ancient Egyptians and their formidable empire, in prosperous societies, government addresses critical components of infrastructure. This in turn enables citizens to be employed, feed their families, and serve as functioning cogs in society. So it was with the Sumerians, Greeks, Romans, 16th century Spanish, various European monarchies, and eventually the Western Hemisphere.

To say that an entrepreneur didn't build his business or had only a marginal effect in the enterprise because the government laid the groundwork is a fanatical Leftist assertion. Effective governments are vital; ineffective governments are a curse. Some governments have damaged and diminished the role of the citizens who otherwise would have made great contributions to society.

31.7 Million Strong

The U.S. has 31.7 million small businesses, providing products and services to customers and clients who are often eager to consume them. To say, “You didn't build that” is a slap in the face to entrepreneurs and their hard work, initiative, and sometimes outright genius.

Consider the reverse: If a successful entrepreneur did not build his or her business, what does one say about an unsuccessful entrepreneur who basically traveled the same roads, attended the same schools, and were taught by the same teachers?

If entrepreneurs are not the driving force in their own business, what differentiates success and failure? If those who succeed cannot be given full credit, what can we say about those who fail spectacularly? That some strange forces were at play?

The Driving Force

As a result of dispensing our tax dollars on infrastructure, thank goodness that government sometimes serves as it should. Even better: when government lowers taxes, reduces unnecessary and burdensome regulations, and gets the hell out of the way. When elected government officials, on any level, do not perform effectively, they need to be replaced. In any event, they are not the principal force as to whether or not an individual entrepreneur is successful.

Sorry Barack 0bama and Joe Biden; we did build it, and apart from what effective governments around the world have done for thousands of years, your government plays only a minor, supporting role.

Biden Domestic Terror Strategy Codifies Woke War on Wrongthink,

Opinion, by Ben Weingarten, Fellow, Claremont Institute, June 30, 2021........

Very scary Newsweek article? I highly recommend it. I’m shocked Newsweek ran it.

Biden just unveiled his permanent all-Democrat govt plan:

<><> the Biden definition of “white supremacy” makes at least 26% of Americans into criminals—probably more.

<><> Whatever “they” don’t like is redefined as white supremacy and terrorism. They have that power now....

<><> Only a very specific flavor of racism and bigotry is on the Biden menu; all of our troubles belong to white Americans.

<><> Alarmingly, the Biden strategy leaves the door open for the US government to collude with foreign intelligence services in pursuing Americans.

<><> Biden’s thuggery will be ‘colluding’ with global Chinese commie ‘intel groups’ (Hunter has all the connections).

They will never understand because they are takers. They never made anything in their lives.

I am not sure what Davidson means by "or someone who supports a small business". Perhaps that is someone who works. It certainly isn't government or any government employee.

It’s businesses and the people employed by them who paid the taxes which allowed government to spend in roads and bridges.

Countries without a solid middle class do not have good infrastructure (at least outside the capital).

One of my liberal friends echoed Obama’s words to me and I shut him down with a simple proposition. Let everyone use the infrastructure in proportion to the Federal/State/Local taxes that they pay.

“You didn’t build that” plus the media explanation of obamas’ utterance, “indebted to our national infrastructure” actually speaks to the new pagan materialist view of reality held by Obama, the Oligarchy, Globalists, et al. Marx was a materialist as well and his view of man was this: man is an aggregate of matter in motion (no soul, no will, no mind) and is thus an aspect of earth (a great aggregate of matter) and the cosmos (the greatest aggregate of matter). Matter is all there is and it is matter that makes man and all else, thus man “didn’t build that.”

"Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business, you didn't build that."
The government took/takes private property for roads and highways. Even the railroads are private property . You have to have their permission to build or develop anywhere near their property. AKA their right of way.

Did government provide machinery and equipment to build anything?

Where did Obama/Biden think the money comes from for their pet projects they proudly put their name on?

There was no Federal Income Tax until 1913 and no "government tooth fairy" to take care of you.

Obama is a Communist and can't accept the idea of personal responsibility and achievement.

By this he believes the government can take away your freedom and your property.

Happy Independence Day All
With regard to barry’s Carter Caterpillar event jaw dropping exhibition of blurting especially when you don’t know who you’re talking to, I interject,
Private enterprise did in Fact build that, everything including all the infrastructure necessary to conduct and promote private enterprise capitalism. That includes roads and the like that the public uses all funded and developed with and by revenues, taxes and fees paid by the capitalist endeavors in the area that pays for it and benefits.
All else ie: free stuff that the government does with the people’s money, is non sustainable waste

Obama’s statement was to plant the seed for what the future should look like....where everyone worships the Politburo for the roads and bridges and everything that the people are allowed to have.

You gotta give him credit. Got everyone thinking and reacting. Ok so he’s just half right. He got the other half to be proud of themselves while sticking it to us. Teachable moment and too many of us don’t get it.

There’s more. Didn’t the Chinese build the intercontinental railroad? They’ll take credit even if it’s not all of it they built.

A hundred years later there’s the Mexicans. Discrimination comes with the territory anytime there are newcomers. Gotta admit there’s no structure or pushback.
