Team USA was fried by the French in a stunning men’s basketball opening loss at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Americans led Team France by seven with under four minutes remaining, but the French scored the next 14 points for a shocking 83-76 victory at Saitama Super Arena.

Nets star Kevin Durant was in early foul trouble and finished with 10 points on 4-for-12 shooting in 21 minutes before fouling out in the closing seconds. Jrue Holiday net a team-high 18 and Bam Adebayo adding 12.

"At least the French have gotten rebellious. We sit back and think the next election is going to save us."

Let's see what happens if there is another mandated national lock down here.

Trump tried, he was a leader, but he lacked active freedom fighters.

I agree but I think it is a bit more complicated then this.

And yet Canadians remember it as a sobering moment as well … because even though they emerged victorious, it was clear to everyone that the Soviets had caught up to the dominant Canadians at Canada’s own game.

“Any loss hurts, and this situation hurts more, but life goes on,” USA coach Gregg Popovich said. “This is very important. We would have loved to have won, just like any other team, we would have loved to win games in this tournament. But, we all have family and lives and life moving on.”

At least they won’t have to endure the oppressive playing of our national anthem . . .

I still say the greatest moment in Hockey was when the Soviets left the ice against the Flyers and the Flyers fans started chanting “They’re Going Home!”

Fits in with the Biden Administration's "America Last" policy.
It just wasn't fair that USA got all those medals in the past Olympics games. /s

Due to connections one of my aunts had, I was lucky enough as a young boy to meet some basketball stars, including a few of the members of the Dream Team, in private settings. Granted this was through a child’s eyes, but what has always stuck with me is how normal the guys were despite the success and mansions they had. I’m sure they had their vices like most young men with money, but they weren’t “thugs” and they didn’t approach others as if they were beneath them. I can’t imagine the anti-American egomaniacs in the NBA of today are anything like that. And they play that way, too.

Good point, yes, I do now recall the players were on elite college teams. So not just out of high school but they did seem like a bunch of young kids. Mike Eruzione, who I have had the pleasure of personally meeting, played for BU. He grew up in Winthrop. I was in Revere at the time. Our high school teams played each other in hockey. I believe he was the oldest one on the team.

“Fits in with the Biden Administration’s “America Last” policy.”

Athletes can train their bodies to their full potential, but the thing that carries an athlete to victory over other trained players is the mental strength of purpose, the winning attitude.

This American team is in mental turmoil and will continue to perform poorly.

The Kevin Love of maybe 5 years ago would have been a great addition to the team. He’s just shot physically now, and I say that as a Cavs’ fan who has watched him play here since 2014.

Other countries actually allow their Caucasian talent to play. Here it does not develop and they soon become bench warmers.

But, we all have family”

In many cases, the players don't even know where half that "family" is.

I was too young to remember that, but I’m convinced that hockey would have become a top-tier major sport in the U.S. long before it did had the Flyers not employed their street-thug brand of hockey so successfully back in the 1970s.

Buzz Schneider may have been the oldest player on that team. I’m pretty sure he was the only one who had previously played for the U.S. in the 1976 Olympics.

“Incredible what has happened to attitudes since then.”

Up until the Dream Team, Basketball was considered ‘an American Game’. Certainly that is the way we regarded it, and I’m sure that is the way most of the world saw it up to that point.

But now Basketball is played a high-level in several parts of the world. And a few of these places can field an Olympic team that can beat an NBA All-star squad. The players’ attitudes are driven by the NBA’s attempts to market the game all over the globe.

Baseball was once our “National Pasttime”, now look at the average MLB roster.
