EXPLAINER: The impact of Joe Biden’s new fuel economy rules

DETROIT — President Joe Biden wants to erase Donald Trump’s rollback of automobile pollution and fuel economy standards.

He proposed new rules Thursday and unveiled a nonbinding deal with most automakers to have electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen-electric vehicles make up half of their U.S. sales by 2030.

The moves are part of Biden’s plan to fight climate change by persuading people to swap their gas-powered vehicles for those that run on electricity.

WHAT WILL THE NEW STANDARDS DO?

They basically return pollution and gas mileage requirements close to those adopted when Barack Obama was president.

WILL THEY HELP WITH CLIMATE CHANGE?

They should, although environmental groups say they don’t move fast enough to tackle an acute problem that has warmed oceans and spawned more powerful storms, wildfires and floods.

WILL THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE DEAL BRING MORE CHOICES?

Maybe. The automaker agreements aren’t binding, so there’s no requirement to comply.

WILL THIS BE THE END OF THIRSTY MUSCLE CARS OR GIANT SUVS?

Probably not. But since the standards come close to matching the Obama requirements, they could get tougher on big trucks and SUVs.

WILL AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE COST MORE THAN A GAS CAR OR TRUCK?

Electric vehicles now cost $8,000 to $10,000 more than a combustion-engine vehicle, says the consulting firm Alix Partners. But automakers say the difference is narrowing as they sell more EVs and develop lower-cost batteries.

They get the SUVs and we get the tuna cans.

electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen-electric vehicles..

So where does all the electricity come from to charge these very expensive vehicles?

Where does all the electricity come from to make the hydrogen?

Where do all the customers come from since most cannot afford such virtue signalling luxury?

Exactly ... where does the electricity come from? Where do the batteries come from? Who mines for the material, and where, and do the mines comply with all safety, environment and child labor standards?

In other words, climate change seems to be a first-world concern but the third world pays for it in terms of pollution, unsafe and toxic mines, child labor, slave labor ... why should the poor on the other side of the world have to suffer so some of us can feel good about “saving the planet.”

“In other words, climate change seems to be a first-world concern...”

And it’s all hoax.

with this act the US will be at the mercy of the CCP and the Congo for its batteries and windmills, how nice. Also I heard one of Biden’s sources for oil will be China, who, since they have none, will charge hugely for the transshipment - after they have satisfied their own needs.

Slave labor is no stranger to Democrats.

Pfffft. As if that's a fact.

“Electric vehicles now cost $8,000 to $10,000 more than a combustion-engine vehicle, says the consulting firm Alix Partners. But automakers say the difference is narrowing as they sell more EVs and develop lower-cost batteries”........What they fail to mention here is that there will be inflation as well in the future & do they really think that EVs will be cost effective?. Doubtful & also doubtful is the chance of having enough electricity to charge them as well as to fulfill other needs..and they are going backwards on solving this part of the problem with their “renewable energy sources”. Isn’t there anyone in power anymore who can think logically?

What the liberals don’t understand that when the batteries fail, it will be too expensive to replace and land fills won’t be taking this poisonous garbage.

Quartz watches are much cheaper to build than mechanical watches because they have far fewer parts.

Can someone tell me why electric cars are more expensive than combustion engine cars? They have far fewer parts. Are the batteries really that much more expensive than all of the intricate and high-precision parts that go into an ICE? What will happen to the price of batteries if everyone is forced to buy an electric car?

Hydrogen fueled cars ensues no emissions like electric cars cause.

You don't just condense hydrogen out of the air, it's got to be produced usually by electrolysis from water which is very energy intensive. Therefore, just like electric cars, the electricity has to come from somewhere. The only really viable clean source of electricity we have is nuclear, but the greenies long ago declared war on nukes so it comes back to conventional ways of producing electricity to power either your electric car or hydrogen powered car. You can't get there with windmills or solar, they can't now or in the future provide the output of electricity needed. That means you're back to burning natural gas or coal to get the electricity you need to power your car whether it be an electric car or via hydrogen produced with a massive amount of electricity.

Hydrogen is the cleanest form of energy to produce there is on question about it.
