David Petraeus calls Afghanistan a ‘Dunkirk moment’
NY Post ^ | 08/17/2021 | Mark Moore

Former CIA Director David Petraeus called the chaotic evacuation of Americans and Afghan civilians from Afghanistan a “Dunkirk moment” — as Biden administration officials reveal they are unaware of the exact number of US civilians in the nation now under Taliban control.

“This is a Dunkirk moment and our decisions created it. We need to acknowledge that. And we should now act as if we do recognize the catastrophe that we have created for Afghans who supported us,” Petraeus, who commanded US forces in Afghanistan during the Obama administration, said in an interview with the Cipher Brief on Tuesday.

“We should ensure that the Taliban knows that we will not tolerate their efforts to impede the movement of individuals to get to the airport and get out of the country. And we should demonstrate that if need be. That is the only way to discharge our moral obligation to those who supported and served with us and who are now marked men and women in their own country because of that,” he said.

"The Nazi's let the British leave."

Not all of the British troops, nor the French, got out alive.

Yeah I don’t think the Brits bribed the Nazis either, but “Dunkirk moment” is the best analogy I’ve seen.... unless they start killing our people.

Then there’s nothing to compare it to.

He’s wrong. England ultimately won the war. It was actually a Suez Canal moment. That effectively marked the end of the British Empire as something other than an organization.

Exactly. Nothing "heroic" about it at all. If Adolf wasn't such a nutcase, he would have had 600,000 POWs and June 6th would likely never have happened.

Seems more like a Waterloo moment.

The Nazis were killing any British they could reach...

The British were in a _lot_ better shape at Dunkirk that the US is at the Kabul Airport.....

Dunkirk? It’s much more like Stalingrad. A surrounded location. Inept leadership. A fierce enemy. People lined up next to evacuation aircraft. Only one runway left, etc.

The only thing missing is the snow.

Oh

Civilians were cornered at Dunkirk

These linear thinkers. Geeze

No it’s not Dunkirk. It’s not Saigon nor the Iran hostage situation

It is Afghanistan

It is an illegal occupant of the White House known you have colluded with CCP favoring the CCPs goals At the expense of tens of thousands of lives of Civilian Americans and our allies

It is unprecedented. It is biblical in proportion. No screw up deliberately or not deliberate has ever been recorded that is destructive to this extent

Everyone from Brian Williams to Wallace either one can try to spin this but they will only get sucked in to the vortex that will be known as the implosion of Biden

He will be known through history like all historical villains and cowards

Britain’s Retreat from Kabul 1842

"In the initial bloody aftermath of battle, it appeared that only one man had survived the slaughter. His name was Assistant Surgeon William Brydon and somehow, he limped into the safety of Jalalabad on a mortally wounded horse, watched by those British troops who were patiently waiting for their arrival. Asked what had happened to the army, he answered “I am the army”."

I would argue Dien Bien Phu is a closer parallel. The entrapment and successful evacuation of Dunkirk steeled the resolve of the British people. The fall of Dien Bien Phu demoralized the French people in terms of both morale and international prestige.

Guess which happens here...

I think we are witnessing the death of Progressivism in the USA

First it will occur abroad, but soon it will occur at home.

This is the mind of one of our finest generals. Somehow, this reminds him of Dunkirk.

Afghanistan is not France.
The US was protecting the drug trade to boost the narcodollar and what’s left of the reserve currency status. I guess we will see more fentanyl from China and Mexico to make up the loss. The US dollar depends on criminal activities. Human trafficking, drug trafficking thanks to DEA and cartels alliance.
That said, it’s always good to keep piling on Biden because this further alienates him from the military, so much the better.

I am thinking the Taliban are confused themselves at this point—especially if the ransom payments are not making it all the way down the chain of command...

I would not be surprised to see a renegade missile or two fired before this is over...

Either afraid or already paid off. Because if there’s one thing the Democrats are good at, it’s giving money to our enemies.
