Mayor Bill de Blasio paid tribute to Colin Powell, who died Monday from COVID-19 complications, saying the Harlem-born first black secretary of state exemplified the best of the Big Apple and made New Yorkers “very proud.”
“General Powell served this nation with just tremendous distinction,” he said Monday morning during his daily press briefing, held remotely in City Hall.
De Blasio noted Powell’s “absolute classic New York City story” of being born to Jamaican immigrants, growing up in Harlem and The Bronx and graduating from Morris High School before attending City College of New York.
“Just an absolute great example of the good, the talent, the ability that came out of New York City, but he took it to the next level,” said the mayor.

There may be something to be said for, “Go into the hospital with xxx, get COVID.”
Hospitals should be using Ivermectin for killing this, assuming it works.
LOL.
Reminds me of how I found out Pope John Paul II had been shot in 1981. I was walking to my apartment building’s laundry room when I heard a TV through a neighbor’s open window: “Pope Shot! Film at 11!” I almost dropped my laundry basket.
They were always doing these little three-second news teasers on TV back then. “_______ Dies! Film at 11!”
JoeBama on obamaumao— “clean and articulate”..... and a Communist/NeoMarxist demonrat who had him a VP as a counter barometer assured to protect obamaumao from any... danger making Biden pres. But.... here he is... the Potemkin moron President.
And how many “real” blacks called barack and Colin not authentically... “Black” millions did. He was a
C student at best, and hung with Cuomo’s machine as he legged his way through the Bush family largesse and positions.
Powell actually petitioned for a Scottish Coat of Arms. Incredible:
The Powell coat of arms includes an insignia commemorating his appointment as honorary Knight Commander of the most Honourable Order of the Bath, an honor he and General Norman Schwarzkopf received from H.M. Queen Elizabeth II.
Schwarzkopf being more deserving of an actual Knight’s honor by his true heritage.
One may wonder how Powell’s grant of “Arms” fits into the heraldry rules. Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a family coat of arms. A coat of arms at any one time is the personal property of only one individual. Coats of arms cannot be granted directly to non-British subjects, so Colin Powell petitioned for a grant of the arms for his father, Luther Powell. Luther is a citizen of Jamaica and, therefore, of the Crown. His mom was Maud McKoy (said to claim scottish background, from Jamaica. They met in the Bronx and Luther became naturalized US citizen in 1936, and Maud in 1944. So— no WAY could Powell have run for President (even under the obamaumao Pelosi ‘rules’, and largely because his wife Alma... said... “hell, no!”.

He said he considered himself a fiscal Conservative, and a social liberal. He wouldn't have been much better. Remember he voted for Obama at least once, maybe twice.
Powell seems to have had all the wrong friends.
LOL, what were they saying about him back in 2003?
That is how I kind of view it in a nutshell.
And even though men like Benedict Arnold showed us that past actions as a war hero can and do (for good reason) get overwritten by treachery, I still try to remember that Powell probably wasn’t always the way he became, enamored of the Washington Cocktail and Media Circuit.
He showed his true character in the Scooter Libby debacle. He did the equivalent of knowingly letting an innocent man hang, because it was politically advantageous to him or his personal interests.
I will bet if GEN Powell supported Trump we wouldn’t even hear about his passing for weeks.
My point has less to do with general Powell and more to do with a deplorable tendency among us conservatives to flit from personality to personality in a desperate quest for a conservative who can carry us to victory. Donald Trump taught us the need to scrutinize with a cold and sober judgment the conservative bona fides of any pretender to conservative leadership. Regrettably, our tendency in the past has been to seize upon African-American conservatives as the personality who will win the day by holding onto conservative votes and poaching African-American votes away from Democrats.
In this quest we have had conservative boomlets for ColinPowell, Candi Rice, Herman Cain, Ben Carson and Alan Keyes of whom the latter two might be said to be reliably conservative. The most conservative, Alan Keyes, probably received the least support in this forum.
Beyond seizing on skin color as the litmus test which will yield us a winner, we ought to question whether our practice of substituting personality for policy has so often led us in pursuit of false prophets. This is a human failing not limited to conservatives but rife in the Republican Party that has produced candidates such as Mitt Romney. The virus is even more advanced among Democrats, but their cancer should not be ours.
We are now in an era in which the Republic faces existential threat from which we can be extricated, in my judgment, only by the firmest application of conservative policy. At the moment we are fortunate that we have Trump as the putative leader and probable nominee but we are also deep in the bench: Cotton, Cruz, DeSantis and Pompeo, any one of whom would do because every one of them is plainly conservative.
I hope this election cycle will prove different in that we refrain from vicious ad hominem attacks and confine ourselves to examining what is important: the candidate's actual commitment to conservatism.
Colon Bowel.
the same guy who prolly called him a BabyKiller back in the day...
Powell had cancer when he died.
“When the character of a man is not clear to you, look at his friends”—Japanese Proverb
Is that sort of like a criminal who got a 99 year sentence but it could have been life?
Then obviously Powell’s death is ‘wake-up call’ for eligible adults to receive COVID-19 vaccine booster shots, at least according to an expert.
In a city of over 8 million, one guy makes it via affirmative action. That’s not a success story, it’s a story of a failed city.
True.
Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum continue to "write" bestsellers long after death.
YEs, just as I liked Powell until I didn’t.
