Oakland officials are eyeing an expansion to the city’s police force to confront the increase in violent crime, which has resulted in more than 115 homicides so far this year.
Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf (D) said her office is drafting a proposal to put before the City Council that would increase the number of active police officers and require the city to maintain a larger police force, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The mayor is also reportedly planning to propose that the budget cuts set to take effect next summer are reversed. The reductions would freeze 50 police department positions, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

I recall reading when Jerry Brown was mayor of Oakland, someone asked him why he had to have so much police protection when he traveled around the city. He said without hesitating, “because there’s a lot of crime in Oakland.” Probably one of the few times when he was right...
Increase the police force? In a liberal bastion like Oakland? Good luck with that. A friend who works for a major law enforcement agency in SoCal says applications have cratered. He says they went from around 20,000 applications per year to just over 3,000. They are either going to start hiring a lot of people who don’t belong in uniform or they won’t keep up with attrition.

The city is collecting a tax which they can no longer collect if the number of officers falls below 678. It now has. They are scrambling to protect their tax revenue by hiring more officers, because otherwise they’re going to have to figure out a way to illegally keep collecting the tax, probably by coming up with a BS legal argument why their illegal tax collecting is legal, and then tying it up in court.
The idea of obeying the law by not collecting the tax with less than 678 officers is probably not even on their radar screen.
