Build Back Bummer: Biden’s Humongous Spending Spree Includes a Kill Switch for Your Car
PJ Media ^ | 12/01/2021 | Lincoln Brown

Remember the good ol’ days of the Affordable Care Act? Remember when Nancy Pelosi said we had to pass the bill to learn what was in it? Yeah, that was great, wasn’t it? Good times.

Well, hold on to your seatbelts, sports fans. Biden’s infrastructure bill promises to be an even bigger piñata filled with objects usually found in your cat’s litterbox. According to an op-ed by former Georgia Representative Bob Barr, the package contains a well-hidden item: kill switches in cars.

Ostensibly, the device, whatever it is, will passively monitor the driver for indications of impaired operation and turn the car off if it decides there is a problem. If that isn’t enough overreach for you, get a load of this: The system can be accessed by third parties. That includes law enforcement, whatever government agency or company that thinks it has a right to monitor your activity, or your friendly neighborhood hacker who just wants to cause a little mayhem or extort you for as much cryptocurrency they can get you to cough up. Or a foreign power that decides it would be a good time to put the screws to American transportation. Given the success of the recent spam attack on the FBI’s email servers, I’d say an average mid-sized compact doesn’t stand a chance.

The government can’t even keep itself safe from a cyberterrorism, let alone your car. For that matter, how many times have you had to repeat yourself because Siri gave you every answer except the one you were looking for? I turned it off for that reason alone. Well, that and the thing gives me the creeps.

HERE’s THE QUESTION:

How did something like this end up in the spending package? More than likely it has been festering on someone in Washington’s to-do list for years now.

Democrats (and probably more than a few Republicans) keep their pet projects close at hand, just waiting for the opportunity to shoe-horn them into a bill. And keep in mind that the administration is probably not doing this because it needs to do it, but because it can.

Now that they have control of the executive branch and both houses, they see this as an opportunity to implement what they had in mind for years.

Not our cars. They have no kill switches and we’re keeping them. We’re old enough and cars last a long time these days with proper care.

This is being done under the guise of combatting drunk driving.

You see, the system will detect when you are impaired and shut down. But the remote part was not in the original legislation.

However, this is something law enforcement has been requesting for decades...the ability to end a car chase with a signal.

Both are noble causes. But like all good intentions, it is also open to malfeasance and abuse.

My first car was a clunker. But I lived in a bad neighborhood, so I installed a kill switch in my car. And it saved my car from being stolen once. (But I did have to pay to replace the broken window and the popped ignition.)

Silly me. When I read the headline here I thought they were talking about that kind of kill switch. I should have known it was more government over-reach.

Americans are being gas-lighted and herded into EVs. Not only will they be much more expensive, far more difficult to repair, they will also be another very useful tool of social control

At some point soon, the overreach will result in open season on all progressives with no bag limit

We have a brand new Durango Hellcat. Last month, just before (safely) entering a round about, it randomly hard breaked for two seconds - something only an inexperienced or panicked driver would do! This tech is gonna backfire in deadly ways if it progresses.

What a nightmare. I have a car with a lane departure alert. A few weeks ago while I was driving on a rural road, the alert system was constantly going off because the lanes were very narrow and the system felt I was too close to the center line. The system kept bringing up a warning message - “Please take a break from driving.” If it were a kill switch, it would have shut down my car in the middle of nowhere.

How bout at 80mph in heavy traffic, should be a hoot. I have at least 1 vehicle with no PCM/ECM and plan to keep it that way. I don’t see ever having a new vehicle.

The problem is that eventually auto insurance will be contingent on these devices being in the cars. Think of all the devices that insurance companies offer for a discount on your rate. My company requires an app and monitored driving to have a company car.

A kill switch provision wouldn’t last one day in the Supreme Court. Let’s see: how many Amendments would that violate? At least 5, I’d say.

I don’t see ever having a new vehicle.

Not at today's prices! A new truck cost nearly as much as my house did! $50k-100k is not unusual!................
