It happened because Mitch and the rest of the assistant Democrats wanted it to happen.
Full stop.
MADD pressed for this...
Stated publically “This can save 10,000 lives each year from drunk drivers”.
HOW many new cars are produced each year in the USA???
5 million?
10 million?
15 million????
This Expensive requirement is going to cost auto makers a whole wad of $$$$$ and it is a total INSULT to those of us who DO NOT EVEN DRINK...
OVER REACH on STEROIDS
Some autos already have them - as Tesla drivers discovered a few days ago...
We’re kind of always forced to buy newer cars here.
There a very few cars over 15 years old on the roads in the Midwest.
I would have nothing but 20+ year old cars if I could, but rust from the salted roads claims them all.
So at some point, all the cars on the road here will have this “feature”.
I see a future in black market software upgrades for vehicles, much like there is now for software to increase engine performance.
Caribbean rules: Never lock your (rental) car or leave anything more valuable than about $5 in there. Especially never leave sunglasses in a visible place.
You’ll only get your window punched out, which you will have to pay for.
Bet you didn’t know which set of rules that you were operating under?
“Impaired” not “intoxicated”.
Ever have to drive drive when your really tired?
Expect to be stranded on the side of the road if you drift to the edge of the lane one too many times.
I’m more interested it what will happen when peoples cars just shut off/slow down suddenly in the fast lane on a crowded highway.
I’m sure that won’t cause any safety issues.
Should be great for dodging pot holes in the spring, too.
My Subaru has a system like that, but it also has lane assist that will steer you back into the lane.
I have to turn in off in the winter time as the lines are all covered in snow, and it sees the lines of snow on the road as lane lines.
It has jerked my car to to side more than once.
Emergency steering corrections are less than optimal on snowy icy roads.
Fortunately I have the ability to turn all those safety features off.
The “never lock your car” rule is probably a good one. It would have saved me from having to replace a broken window. But I still would have had to replace a popped ignition.
Anyway, I did follow another good rule: Move out of the city.
“A new truck cost nearly as much as my house did!”
In today’s dollars a 1923 Model-T truck would be $12,000.
Can’t quote it exactly, but I think it was Ben Franklin who said you can have safety or freedom, but you can’t have both.
This is IN SPADES what’s going on today. The left has finally raised enough fearful children in our schools, and they are frightening them into submission. COVID, racism, “safe spaces”, gun control, and now a kill switch to stop drunk driving.
I once worked with a guy who said he could stop all crime. When pressed, he answered, “Death Penalty for parking tickets.” I wouldn’t go down the violation ladder that far, but actually using it for murder and treason would be a good start.
My $2500 1974 PINTO would cost $14,838.47.................

Ain’t gonna be on my vehicle. I don’t own anything newer than a 2010, and don’t plan to.
The difference is that the ferral’s in US cities — even the very young — want to swipe the car itself. Down in the Caribbean they’re happy with a pair of sunglasses or a pack of chewing gum.
Keep those serfs from traveling too far off their lord’s estate. short range + long recharge time = less travel and almost no long distance travel. But Hey, electricity is free right?
0 to 60 in about an hour.
MST3K’s The Dead Talk Back. Probably my current favorite movie they made fun of. Eclipsing both version of Angel’s Revenge.
As long as you can get the parts you’ll be OK. Govt years ago told automakers they didn’t have to have parts for vehicles older than 10 years. My daily driver is 22 years old.
I’m catching grief with basic Willys jeep body parts.
Recently I tried to finally order the military style dash which always seemed plentiful on EBay and a couple of other dealers. 30 45 day backlog.
Maybe this payday I hope for fenders. Assuming they will be available.
...or shut off in the middle of a railroad crossing, or on one of those narrow mountain roads, with no shoulder, sheer rock on one side, and a thousand foot drop on the other. Not to mention some poor sap trying to drive to the emergency room because they're dying, and the freaking car thinks they're "impaired" and turns itself off.
PREDICTION: the federal government will eventually exempt its own vehicles from these asinine requirements...
Used cars are shipped all over the country. I knew a guy in that business, he’s retired now. He used to move an average of 30 Mercedes a month, clearing about a grand each time. Or you can take a vacation to Arizona and drive one back.
