A confirmed wolf kill was discovered near Walden, Colo., the home of one of Colorado’s wolf packs. An approximately 500 pound purebred replacement heifer was found dead after being attacked and eaten by this pack of wolves. This is the first confirmed wolf kill of livestock in Colorado in over 70 years.
In early 2021, Colorado Parks and Wildlife confirmed the existence of this pack in north central Colorado; however, individual wolves have been sited in the area previous to the pack confirmation. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials are working closely with the livestock producer to learn as much from this situation as possible as a mechanism to better inform Colorado’s current Wolf Restoration and Management Plan.
“On behalf of the livestock producer, who is a member of the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, as well as Colorado Parks and Wildlife, we ask that the public refrain from disturbing the area and individuals associated with this wolf attack,” said Steve Wooten, CCA president.
While unfortunate, this wolf kill further brings to light issues that must be addressed by the Wolf Restoration and Management Plan, specifically:
Lethal and non-lethal methods, including hazing, of wolves for conflict minimization.
A guaranteed funding source that allows Colorado Parks and Wildlife to fairly provide the needed tools for prevention and compensation from wolf impacts.
Impacts from wolves go beyond livestock death and injury, to include more far-reaching impacts on livestock performance, such as loss of pregnancy, weight loss, imbalanced range usage, etc.
A strongly encourages the members of the Wolf Restoration and Management Plan working groups and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission to consider this wolf attack and the widespread impacts as a sentinel example of how livestock can be impacted by wolf introduction.
Canadian Wolves are not natural predators in Colorado.
Zulu, I think that I stopped too short and that you have proposed a win win here. Let all who want to hug the nice little wolfies up close and personal in their own cities instead of ours. Seems fair and equitable to me. They can all be like that moron that liked to hang out with grizzly bears and be one with nature.
“”Elephants are herbivores, but these giant creatures can be very dangerous if agitated.
Kill all elephants....””
Only reason elephants are still alive today is because they are profitable to governments that have them. Elephants can destroy vast amounts of vegetation and crops, absolute bull dozers. They can wipe out a person yearly crop in a matter of hours to days. So the answer would be yes, they most likely would be killed off without human protection. Humans are the dominate species on earth and have the ability to control or remove any other species we choose, even other humans.
He became one with nature alright, just another pile of Grizzly Bear scat, that’s about as back to nature as you can get.
It's their own fault. These people clearly need to put up signs and electric fences to keep the wolves out, because that will work. /s :)
The left voted for ( and Polis is pushing ) wolf packs to kill only in rural ( western ) areas, thus they do not want this near them, only on their enemies .
Another Polis administration bureaucrat is facing allegations of skirting Colorado’s ethics laws.
Dan Gibbs, the executive director of the state Natural Resources Department, provided a $496,000 contract to his wife’s employer, the Keystone Policy Center, to manage wolf reintroduction in Colorado,
I regularly find Fox scat in my yard. I have been burying it but maybe need to start incinerating it or something.
(Ellendra suggested that canine scat could be turned into charcoal so that may be a way to deal with it. Thank you Ellendra!)
Wolves and livestock don’t go together.
So you’re okay with Colorado wolves taking down cattle but not Canadian wolves? And if ranchers are compensated for losses sustained on their property what’s the harm? I’m not trying to be a smart ass, I truly want to understand the anti-wolves argument.
👍👍👍👍
Libtards love to make stupidity pay off.
Just like Uncle Joe Biden, Pelosi, McConnell et al.
That is ridiculous-a well-balanced ecosystem should have enough prey for the predator animals to pretty much leave livestock alone-if not, then there are too many predators and some need to be harvested-so have a season for that-but since it is Oregon, I’m sure PETA, etc will scream about that-if the rural/wilderness areas are managed like the major cities in Oregon are, it is probably a dangerous mess...
I don’t know anything about how Oregon manages wildlife-or if they do at all-but the contractor i work for is from Oregon-raised on a small ranch-after the military brought him to Texas, he stayed here-only goes to visit family in Oregon once a year-he says if the wolves and other wildlife in Oregon are managed like the forests are, then it is going to be a dismal failure-they won’t let people cut down dead and diseased trees or clear dead brush in forests-supposedly because of endangered owls, beetles, etc-so wildfires destroy 1000’s of acres of forest every year, right along with the animals, human’s homes, etc...
People out here lose pets-mostly small and medium dogs-to coyotes and mountain lions, but livestock is not really bothered if in a secure fence area-pets that are not indoors at night are predator fast food-the fine for a dog running loose is up to $1000’s-most livestock kills here are done by loose dogs, not wild predators-so your dog has to be kept on your own property-behind a secure fence and maybe indoors at night if you love your pet and don’t want it carried off and eaten...
I’m sure this is a dumb question-but why in hell would anyone with any sense import Canadian timber wolves to Colorado-or any other state where they had not been before? Were there none of the species that lived in that state originally available? The bears that have been re-introduced to Texas are not imported grizzly/brown bears from Canada or the far northern states like Alaska that were not native to Texas since the end of the last Ice Age-that would be a disaster-they are the same black bears that were here before-re-introduction of a species means you bring back the animal that was there before and is compatible with the area and other wildlife-not some other animal that wasn’t there before-that is insane...
Imported, exotic, not native .. Burmese pythons are over running Florida swamps.
These massive snakes, which can grow to 20 feet long or more, with telephone-pole-sized girths, have all but decimated the region’s small- and medium-sized mammal population, wreaking havoc with the area’s ecosystem.
-2- The Canadian, exotic, not native wolves introduced ( by Ed Bangs & pals ) to Yellowstone - quickly expanded into Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and .. have decimating the elk, moose, and deer... achieving similar end results. ( not only livestock).
Soon: to do the same in Colorado and elsewhere.
Yes : that is insane...but profitable for government beaurocrats and their Sierra Club, ALF, ELF.. lawyers who grab large fees in their sue & settle scams.
At least in Florida they are trying to mediate the damage done by the pythons and other imported pet snakes that were turned loose to breed-by turning a bunch of them into boots and handbags and fining anyone who turns one loose and gets caught into oblivion...
I’m sure there are American gray wolves available for re-introduction programs-they are the species that was there in the 1st place-but I suppose that would make too much sense...
I appreciate that you are asking a legitimate question.
Colorado wolves were not as big and aggressive as Canadian wolves. They were also culled for a reason. I am not okay with either one. The civilized world pushed them out of inhabited areas for a very good reason. What I am okay with, is for people who want them, to go ahead and release them in their own neighborhoods. They can then enjoy them all they want. I’m sure the wolves would adapt just like coyotes do. I don’t want to have to be concerned because some idiot who lives a hundred miles from here thinks that they should be released in my back yard because they believe the Disney version of wolves. I suppose the people who want them might change their minds when one of their children has its guts ripped out by three or four wolves and is eaten alive by the pack.
I get FOX scat on my TV so i switched to Newsmax
ZULU; I suspect a lot of strange parasites reside inside that TV cabinet!
