Biden restores California’s power to set car emissions rules

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration is restoring California’s authority to set its own tailpipe pollution standards for cars, reversing a Trump administration policy and likely ushering in stricter emissions standards for new passenger vehicles nationwide.

A waiver approved Wednesday by the Environmental Protection Agency allows California to set tough emissions rules for cars and SUVs and impose mandates for so-called zero-emission vehicles that do not contribute to global warming.

Former President Donald Trump’s 2019 decision to revoke California’s authority to set its own limits on auto emissions was one of his most high-profile actions to roll back environmental rules he considered overly burdensome on businesses. Regulation of vehicle emissions is central to combating climate change.

President Joe Biden has made slowing climate change a top priority of his administration. Transportation is the single largest source of planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, making up 29% of all emissions.

The waiver also withdraws a Trump-era regulation that blocked other states from adopting California’s standards. Collectively they represent 36% of the U.S. auto market.

It should be up to Congress to set the rules of commerce in states outside of California.

Neither Trump nor Biden should have the power of dictator.

Car makers, not being able to produce enough vehicles, would be wise shut down California operations. Let then commute on tree leaves.

It should be up to Congress to set the rules of commerce in states outside of California.

Yes, but other states want to do business in California which leads to a domino effect of the same BS in other states.

“Car makers, not being able to produce enough vehicles, would be wise shut down California operations.”

Hopefully, California will enact rules to completely shut down any vehicular traffic within the state. That should free up gasoline for the rest of us.

California rules should be strict enough to prevent any liberals from cranking up, leaving their state, and heading this way.

California is a state of yellow dog democrats. Up to their armpits in human feces, they will continue to vote for their own destruction. Better dead than Orange(Man).

The law should be clear one way or another and not subject to imperial edict.

If it is subject to imperial edict, then Congress has unconstitutionally delegated its powers or the law is unconstitutionally vague.

Oh, it’s up to Congress all right. That’s why they (unconstitutionally) “delegated” their powers in this realm to the POTUS by way of creating unaccountable agencies with de facto legislative power (known as “regulations”). It is, in a way, poetic justice to see those selfsame agencies used as a tool to thwart the left-wing agenda; but of course they should not be there in the first place, the POTUS having other means to use the “take care” clause of the Constitution.
