Trump-aligned 'America First' holdouts don't follow GOP in backing Ukraine
NBC via Yahoo ^ | March 20th, 2022 | Peter Nicholas and Jonathan Allen and Allan Smith

They are a distinct minority in their own party and, for that matter, their country: Republican holdouts amid an ever-widening consensus that Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine poses a mortal threat to American interests.

A far right wing of the Republican Party tightly bound to former President Donald Trump is fighting to push the GOP toward the “America First” isolationism that underpinned his 2016 presidential bid.

For the first time since Trump’s rise, his party is pushing back.

That much was clear from the House vote Thursday on a bill ending normal trade relations with Russia as punishment for attacking Ukraine. A total of 202 Republicans joined with 222 Democrats in voting to allow the Biden administration to raise tariffs on Russia, a rare bipartisan consensus in an era of fierce polarization.

Eight Republicans voted against the measure, including Trump loyalists like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia. In a speech on the House floor Thursday, Greene gave a succinct summary of an America First argument that has been getting little traction in the face of deepening sympathy for the Ukrainians’ suffering. After objecting to the abundant attention the war is getting, she said that what “real Americans care about are gas prices that they can’t afford,” inflation and security along the southern border.

In the summer of 2002 GW Bush had an approval rating of 94% and 90% of American supported going to war in Iraq.

Silly me. I was one of them.

Never again.

Trump was more about keeping the USA out of war.. Like he used diplomatic skills to MAKE A DEAL, not just threaten every country who opposed him. Sad.. the Rinos and Dems are going to get us all into a war. God bless Donald J. Trump.

This is total BS.

If “we” “back” Ukraine then we need to go in with our military and HELP them and commit to war.

None of this ankle-biting Vietnam nonsense again.

I’m still waiting to see a valid reason to fight against Russia.

Protecting Democrats access to dirty money in Ukraine is not a valid answer.

I’m rooting for Ukraine, but not to the point where I’m rooting for direct US military involvement.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Assistant Democrats are far more numerous than many suspect.
145 voted for Liz Cheney to lead them away from MAGA last February.
The Democrats can’t have it both ways.
They tell us the Russians are losing because they don’t have enough troops.
Then, they tell us Russia could conquer Europe.
Can’t have it both ways.
We did go in with our military to help them in Vietnam. No more, no thanks. This is not our war. I'm in favor of sending military equipment to the Ukrainians to bleed the Russians, but that's as far as it goes.
RINOs were always very careful to hide who they really are until Trump came on the scene.
After the 2020 Steal, which could not have happened without the complicity of RINO-controlled state legislatures, every grass roots GOP voter knows who they are.
Let the primaries be the beginning of the RINO purge.
The neocons need to explain why they would follow Biden, in any event. They, the neocon RINOs gave the entire FedGov to the Democrats in the stolen 2020 elections. The Democrats have the leadership. Where are the warmongering Democrats? It seems that warmongering is the role that the RINOs agreed to in support of the Uniparty.
I do support America first. I’d get all worked up if Canada invaded the US. Or — and this is just crazy talk — if people were invading us across our Southern Border.
But Ukraine? I do not care in the slightest.
