US seeks new lithium sources as demand for batteries grows

NEWRY, Maine (AP) — The race is on to produce more lithium in the United States.

The U.S. will need far more lithium to achieve its clean energy goals — and the industry that mines, extracts and processes the chemical element is poised to grow. But it also faces a host of challenges from environmentalists, Indigenous groups and government regulators.

Although lithium reserves are distributed widely across the globe, the U.S. is home to just one active lithium mine, in Nevada. The element is critical to development of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that are seen as key to reducing climate-changing carbon emissions created by cars and other forms of transportation.

Worldwide demand for lithium was about 350,000 tons (317,517 metric tons) in 2020, but industry estimates project demand will be up to six times greater by 2030. New and potential lithium mining and extracting projects are in various stages of development in states including Maine, North Carolina, California and Nevada.

“Nobody really foresaw this huge spike in demand,” said Tim Crowley, vice president of government affairs for Lithium Nevada, a subsidiary of a company developing a mine in Thacker Pass, Nevada. “We owned the lithium space for a long time, and we forfeited it to China.”

Much of the world’s lithium comes from South America and Australia, and China dominates the worldwide supply chain for lithium-ion batteries. The U.S. produces less than 2% of the world’s supply of lithium, although it has about 4% of the reserves. The largest reserves in the world are in Chile.

We fund Putin’s war by buying his oil.
We will fund China’s takeover of Taiwan by buying Lithium and a whole host of consumer goods.

Most of the bad stuff in the world is paid for by us.

Nobody really foresaw this huge spike in demand

Really? With all the hype, a second grader could have seen it!

Next question: Now what are we going to do with all the lithium waste?

Maybe if congress & Dimjo would simply lower the working age to around 8 years of age, this country could afford to mine lithium same as in most lithium producing countries.

Or maybe if they put subsidies in the next farm bill, we could get farmers to grow lithium. Just like corn and taters.

This is sarcasm for the literalist here on FR

Stop prescribing it to all of those neurotic, confused, inebriate, Karen, leftist wine-women.

That should uncover a lithium source that would last decades…

From 2010...

President Obama backs US lithium developers

But it never happened, did it.

Because our Deep State and others didn't want it to happen.

Here is a novel idea. Give up on the idea of “clean” energy, no such animal exist (with the exception of hydro- electric). The environmental damage done creating “clean energy” is worse then using fossil fuel.

This whole “man made” global climate change is a scam. It is being used to control people as well as make a few extremely rich.

The developing-world lithium mines are reportedly environmental disasters.

Granted at the time I had anything to do with using products made from “rare” earth metals, which by contract had to be sourced from the American mainland, we were self-sufficient in them. There were mines in, I think, California and many states out west. Over time the EPA shut them down because they were in “environmentally endangered areas” or because of the hazardous chemicals used in refining the metals. (One acid wash after another.) But we HAVE the metals. Trump midwifed a mine out west and got it almost approved before he left office. Haven’t heard anything about it sense.

But calling these rare is a misnomer. They are simply “hard” to manufacture with many potential risks. One reason China has unusable ground water in the north of the country is they had ZERO environmental protection. While I dealt with the issues the mines were nowhere near as destructive even before the EPA came into existance.

The increased demand is caused by the government’s climate policies.

Indeed a scam. Everyone knows that solar and wind can NEVER satisfy the needs of the world...and the climate attack on fossil fuels is hurting everyone. It’s a farce.

It is quite simple , the deep state wants an interdependent world. The deep state wants America dependent on other countries for oil etc. Hamm’s development Balkan oil fields threw a wrench in their plans.

:::::Next question: Now what are we going to do with all the lithium waste?:::::

No worries. The lithium batteries in the landfills will leach into the aquifers and taint the water systems. Just drink the water, you'll never be depressed, and your brain will tell you to just go along to get along. Lithium is nasty stuff. Dirty to mine, when lithium batteries burn they cannit be extinguished, and they cannot be recycled. Disposal of lithium batteries are a separate ecological disaster in the making. Some of the EVs on the road are the equivalent of the 1970's era Fire Pinto....if the battery pan is damaged in a crash, the burst into intense flame.
