Chicago to offer prepaid gas cards to residents amid skyrocketing gas prices

Gas prices have skyrocketed across the U.S., jumping above $4 a gallon in most states. Now, local leaders are trying to find ways to help their residents cope with the price hikes, with Chicago announcing it had established a $12.5 million program to provide transportation relief for low-income residents.
On Thursday, Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced that in order to combat increasing gas prices she would be launching the Chicago Moves program, which will provide 50,000 prepaid gas gift cards worth $150 each along with 100,000 prepaid cards for public transit worth $50 each.

I live in (or just outside) Chicago. The public transportation is expansive. There is not longer than a four block walk from a residence to a train or a bus. There is no need to provide a gas card. The city is broke. The county is broke. The school system is broke. The state is broke. And I don’t mean sort of kind of broke. I mean billions of dollars in debt. They can’t pay their bills. So how can they pay for all these car owners who live next to public transportation to buy very expensive gas. Chicago’s gas is far more expensive than the gas just across the state lines.
