Russia aims to take "full control" of southern Ukraine, general says

"Establishing control over southern Ukraine would also give the Russian army access to Transdniestria, where facts of oppression of the Russian-speaking population have also been observed," Minnekayev said. Transdniestria is the de-facto breakaway region of Moldova that is not internationally recognized but has pro-Russian leaders and about 1,500 Russian troops stationed there.

Before the Russian military retreated from the capital city Kyiv, Moscow claimed that "the first stage" of the attack had been completed, and it is now focusing efforts on the "liberation" of two regions in the east to bring them under the control of pro-Russian leaders in the so-called breakaway Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics.

Military experts and Western officials linked the Russian retreat from Kyiv to significant losses in personnel and hardware as Ukrainian resistance appeared to have exceeded Russian expectations and toppled the initial goal of swiftly capturing the capital and claiming quick victory.

But now, Russia appears to scale up its official goals again, targeting southern Ukrainian cities, even though its previous attempts to attack them have stalled.

If Russia proceeds in this direction of attack, its primary targets would be the key port city of Odesa along nearby Mykolayiv.

Before all of this started my take was, sure the Russians can start a fight. But only the Ukrainians can end it. It doesn’t matter whether Russia takes its objectives. What matters is that it’s over when the Russians think it’s over. I had no notion that the West would support Ukraine in the way they have. Even if the fight was over tomorrow and the West and Ukraine were willing to go with some negotiated settlement, the Russia economy would take years to recover. As it is, there can’t be a negotiated settlement as nobody trusts Putin. The Russians have gotten themselves into a forever war and the people below Putin know that it can’t even be talked about ending it short of an unachievable absolute victory...while Putin is alive. I imagine Putin knows this and sleeping will become a problematic option.

Russia might want to cut Ukraine off from the sea, then they only have to monitor weapons shipments coming in via Poland making the task easier. And once this area is taken, I doubt Ukraine will get it back. The longer this war continues, the more land Ukraine loses.

Drug cartels have taken control of the US border, less than 100 miles from my home.

And yet I’m supposed to care about someone else’s borders 1/2 way around the world?

The longer this war continues, the more land Ukraine loses.

Tell that to the morons here and in our government who thought it was a bright idea to send them weapons and billions of dollars. All of which will evaporate, get confiscated/destroyed by the Russians, or get sold on the black market.

Tell it to that 🐖 pigfaced jackass General Keane.

Two months in, and you cite Joe Haldeman?
He had some interesting tech in that thing though. It was all so cool forty years ago.

You can do something about your drug cartel problem. You have your guns, and your car, Im sure. So start posting stories about how you are patrolling your border. I wish you luck, and Im sure your reports will be fascinating.

The problem with your take is that the West wants a forever war. As for the Russian economy, it is going to do better than that of Europe.

It’s our governments job to secure the border not mine. They would stop me anyway.

But we’re allowed to go and fight for Ukraine, so buddy send me some pictures when YOU get there. I’ll pray for your safety.

According to other reports and comments on FR, the generals and staff who would have attacked the SE of Ukraine and Odessa were all killed.

Yes you actually need to care about places farther away than your home.

Because whether you understand it or not, we’re a world power and dependent on the world economy.

If Russia and China control that world and its economy, your life will change drastically. Not for the better.

As for the Southern Border, Biden and Harris should be removed from office on that issue alone.

No one asked anyone to go and fight in Ukraine. Except Vladimir Putin.

It should be easy for the Russians to take Southern Ukraine now that Russian Nerve Gas attacks killed millions like Daily Mail told us.
