Indonesia, the world's top cooking-oil exporter, says it's going to ban exports of the oil this week, and it's sent the global prices of edible oils soaring

The world's top palm-oil producer announced that it would ban exports of the commodity starting on Thursday, sending the prices of edible oils soaring. Indonesia accounts for about half of the world's supply of palm oil, the world's most widely used vegetable oil. Palm oil is used for cooking and for the production of thousands of consumer products, including biscuits, detergents, and lipsticks.

In a video statement on Friday, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said the move was designed to bring down domestic palm-oil prices and ensure domestic food availability in the wake of global food inflation. "I will monitor and evaluate the implementation of this policy so availability of cooking oil in the domestic market becomes abundant and affordable," Widodo said, a Reuters translation reported.

The move comes as Indonesia has seen recent protests over the high prices of cooking oil, with retail prices gaining more than 40% so far this year, Reuters reported.

I’ve seen palm oil as an ingredient on processed foods labels but can’t remember any particular product.

Last time my next door neighbor was in Texas, he got me a 7.3 pound tub of John Gordon's BaconUp bacon grease at a Buc-ee's in Austin.

From the website: And, if you live in Texas near Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, or San Antonio, you can find Bacon Up in select Buc-ee’s Travel Centers. Check our website for store locations.

There was a lot of deforestation in the early settlement of the U.S. Most of it has grown back and in some places is now more than in the 1800s. Maybe that will be replicated in third world areas in time.

Then again there is U.S. farmland, of which a great deal of it was just praries in the 1700-early 1800s. I wonder which “mother nature” prefers, or does “she” care.

"The world's top palm-oil producer."

I'm really not into palm oil. Just about every island you look at in the south seas produces palm oil..

I can't think of much that you can't bake instead of fry... And we really don't need all those pastries

“Good avocado oil has no discernible flavor”

I wish I could find some mayo that didn’t have soy, but tasted the same. Avocado is...not to my liking.

I render pork fat to make lard. My local butcher saves it for me and I bring home a 50 pound bag and start cooking. It lasts forever in the fridge but it’s fine on the counter if you use a lot of it. Then save your olive oil for salad dressing and other recipes that use oil.

Make your own.

Mayonnaise is just solidified oil with an egg or two in it:

============================================

immersion blender mayonnaise

Ingredients

1 large egg
1 cup oil (olive or avocado)
2-3 tsp lemon juice or lime juice [1 tbsp]
generous pinch of salt

low till it starts thickening
5 seconds up and down at the end to finish

============================================

I picked up a cheap immersion blender at Target for around 20-25 bucks:

Corn oil is as American as a lard crust apple pie.

Too bad all the pigs are shipped to China. No lard.

Or get an air fryer. We’ve been doing chicken wings in the air fryer and they are really good.

I was thinking just that a couple of days ago. I was wondering where to find a tin can (and filter) to start saving.
(Used to use paper towel and rubber band decades ago, but I am sure there is better by now.

My mother was such a bad cook, she would burn water.
(Dad, on the other hand, could cook with the best of them.)
