U.S. Congress revives World War Two-era "Lend-Lease" program for Ukraine

The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly backed legislation on Thursday that will make it easier to export military equipment to Ukraine, reviving the "Lend-Lease Act" that helped defeat Hitler during World War Two.

The House passed the "Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act of 2022" by 417 to 10, three weeks after it sailed through the Senate with unanimous support. It next goes to the White House for President Joe Biden to sign into law.

The measure revives a World War Two-era program that allowed Washington to lend or lease military equipment to U.S. allies. In this case, it will help those affected by Russia's invasion, such as Poland and other eastern European countries as well as Ukraine.

...Among other provisions, the bill would allow the United States to provide equipment to Ukraine now, with just a technical requirement to pay at some later date, essentially giving it to the Kyiv government.

"Ukrainian forces have demonstrated unbelievable strength and bravery, and we must again serve as the arsenal of democracy and ensure they have the full range of resources necessary to defend their sovereignty," said Republican Senator John Cornyn, a lead sponsor of the bill in the Senate, in a statement.

The House passed the legislation the same day that Biden asked Congress to approve $33 billion more for Ukraine, including more than $20 billion for weapons, ammunition and other military assistance.

“You do realize this means NATO and the US will be in a shooting war with neo Tsarist military assets don’t you?
And that can only lead to nukes, because that may be the only functioning strategic card the Tsarists have to play?
Do we really want that?”

No sane person wants nuclear war. But, are you suggesting that we wait for the Russo-China-Iran axis to launch their combined offensive against the West? Hell, even without that Axis, Russia has made it clear that it will not tolerate any former Soviet-Bloc country staying in NATO, and Putin spokesperson have specifically mentioned Poland and Romania and Bulgaria. What do we do in that case? Sit back until Britain and France are threatened, because, well, it’s Europe’s problem? Because, believe me, the Russo-China-Iran Axis has one major goal: Isolate the US.

Face it: The ultimate target is the US.

Hate to say it, but I'd trade Biden for Jimmy Carter in a heartbeat. Carter was awful but he wasn't a totally profiteering dementia addled war monger. And give me Billy Carter over any Biden clansman. President Carter was probably more conversant with nuclear weapons than any president before or since. Biden is still gassing about Corn Pop. How far the Democrat party has fallen.

There are no good answers.

But our military is beat, broken, and being taught that a woman can have a penis.

Our “allies” are not much better.

Are you willing to sacrifice millions of US citizens for Warsaw and Berlin? Do we have any choice?

The US is isolated. The Saudi/Israel power block is leaning into the Sino/Tsarist camp. South America is hoping to sit this one out, but they are leaning toward China. Our ANZAC friends are well, screwed.

To top it off, we don’t have enough supplies domestically to do a global war. We get the stuff from China.

Yes, otherwise how are we different than Russia?

“...and Putin spokesperson have specifically mentioned Poland and Romania and Bulgaria. What do we do in that case? Sit back until Britain and France are threatened...”

No, invoke NATO Article 5.

“Dollar crashing via inflation”

Dollar is going up in value, substantially, since the war started.

If you are going to meddle in wars, then have the brains to consider the other side.

Our Congress has gone mad.

“go ahead and tell us how it’s Russia which is “doomed””

Inflation is higher in Russia, than it is in the West, but you ain’t seen nothing yet. Interest rates are 17% or more already.

More than half of Russia’s foreign reserves were seized by sanctions, and they are burning through their remaining reserves fairly rapidly - on track for complete collapse by year end.

Defaults (including Sovereign (Government) debt), bankruptcies and unemployment are pretty much baked into the cake by the sanctions. Airlines can’t get parts to maintain their planes, and they are banned from huge swathes of airspace. Auto manufacturers can’t get microchips and have had to shut down their production lines. Oil and gas industries have have had their major International partners walk away cold (except for Japanese projects in the Far East), with all their expertise, and their components and software are now embargoed. The Russian advertising industry has come to near standstill, as foreign companies that have pulled out of Russia accounted for the bulk of advertising expenditures in Russia.

There is a massive brain drain of talent out of Russia (More than 10% of their IT workforce has left since the start of the war, including high profile business leaders), and effectively a complete halt on new investment.

Oil and gas shipments in total have already dropped over 1/3, despite increased discounting. Storage is nearing full, and wells have begun to be capped. Europe plans to ban Russian oil by the end of the year, and to have reduced gas imports by 2/3rds.

The wheels are expected to be coming off more clearly in June, but even without future rounds of new sanctions (which are planned), the mounting of effects by the current changes are going to be economically crushing.

The population will have to endure a widespread reduction in their standards of living, with tens of millions reduced below the poverty line. The dictator may secure his power through oppression, and continue to live in his gold encrusted palace, but the Nation itself is quickly on the road to North Korea - poor, oppressed and dependent on China.

Passed on March 11, 1941, the lend-lease act set up a system that would allow the United States to lend or lease war supplies to any nation deemed “vital to the defense of the United States.”

Ukraine, in a border war with Russia, half a world away, and we consider that vital to the defense of the US? Or did we waive that requirement along with the loan durations and who pays for the lease costs.

100% bastardization of lend lease.

“It now looks like Russia is doomed to eventually lose the recently captured territory in the Ukraine, and a big chunk of its standing Military, as well as its oil and gas market share in Europe (over the next two years). “

___________

You’re ignoring China and other support Russia has. This is WWIII, just getting started.

Lots of lives to be lost. Sad.

And we know where lend-lease led us to in the run up to WWII. Germany declared war on us a few days after Pearl Harbor. In the case of Ukraine, we, NATO, have already declared economic war on Russia.

We are in a new Cold War. The law of unintended consequences can result in a kinetic and/or cyber war. Can this be walked back?

Ukraine is not our ally, but their regime is an ally of our ruling class.

Our only role is to pay for it, and perhaps to be killed.

How many illegals does Russia have versus America?
How many racial riots does Russia have versus America?
How many Russian kids identify as trans versus America?
What is Russia’s unemployment versus America?
