KILLEEN, Texas -- Fort Hood likely will be renamed Fort Cavazos after a blue-ribbon commission recommended that the Confederate-named Army base receive a new name along with eight other military bases nationwide. The Naming Commission, which was created by Congress and is responsible for recommending new names or removal of names and symbols that commemorate Confederate figures within the Department of Defense, called for Fort Hood to be named after Gen. Richard Cavazos, a native Texan and the Army's first Hispanic four-star general. The Army's largest active-duty armored post, with about 40,000 soldiers, was named after Gen. John Bell Hood, who led the Confederate Army's Texas Brigade during the Civil War.
No U.S. military bases are named for a Hispanic service member. U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio, pushed for the name change along with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
The commission also recommended changing the name of Fort Bragg in North Carolina to Fort Liberty, and Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia to Fort Walker - for Dr. Mary Edwards Walker who was a suffragist, prisoner of war and surgeon - among others. The commission will make its recommendations to Congress, then it will be then sent to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin for final approval.
"I'm grateful to The Naming Commission for their recommendation to rename Fort Hood for Richard Cavazos," Castro said on Twitter Tuesday.
Whomever decides to change the name should pay for all the change of name out of his own wallet be it uniforms, letterhead, highway signs, shipping labels, bumper stickers, pens, blah, blah, blah.
Get shot in the arm and lose a leg for your cause only to be unceremoniously canceled by wokeism.
I thought for sure they would rename after a radical muslim.
Then you’re part of the problem
Whatever you say perennial south basher who supports a loser football team
Lincoln named the saddle after McClellan because soldiers sat on it.
Nah, I’m all for keeping the name. But I find it a bit curious that they named southern military bases after the more questionable generals.
CC
I’m no Hood fan but he was suffering from crap injuries and in pain and had been given the task to try a Hail Mary in the west which was lost through many bad moves long before him
Fort donelson capitulation
Not trying harder to keep New Orleans
Having Pemberton at Vicksburg
And Johnston to relieve him....Johnston was only good at retreating and preserving his forces
AS Johnston not realizing his boot was filling up with blood ....the big hit
Bragg being kept on despite his horrible generalship
Kirby Smith being kept out west fighting phantoms
Forrest and Cleburne not being corps commands due to politics
Cheatham drunk at Spring Hill
Forrest left out galavanting
Not letting Forrest at least try to flank west out the Franklin to Dickson Hwy ...best shot they had to thwart Schofield retreat over the harpeth
Hood after Schofield snuck by that night 11-29 1864 ....huge blunder
Had no choice but to attack ...well he could have let them go on to Nashville but that was an even taller order though he would have had far more men left to fight with
I am writing around 2500 yards due south of Carnton house on the Eastern flank where they laid out four of the flag officers after the battle on the front veranda
Cleburne was brought to Harrison House about 1000 yards nw of where I’m lying in bed on iPad freeping....a private home open annually for pilgrimage for one day or so
My foundation is on an old plantation house on a cross lane tween Columbia and Lewisburg pikes and they watered at my cistern
It was tragic valor at its utmost
They knew if they failed it was over ....my home state of Mississippi lost the most and the CSA Missouri and Kentucky orphan brigades had no homes to return to
Pitiable ....that night was bitter cold for the wounded and dying on the field
I take a wreath each Christmas to the Mississippi section at McGavock
They name forts and bases after crappy Union and later generals as well
The left wants to control you by controlling the debate; it wants to control the debate by controlling the vocabulary. Controlling the names of things is just part of that game.
Not that it matters, it is difficult to conceive of a more personally courageous or pugnacious general than John Bell Hood, whatever his limitations otherwise.
It's a communist obsession, like when the vc renamed Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City, and commy nonsense here will continue unless the good Senator Joseph McCarthy's work is resumed.
In short, these leftist democrats are showing their racism by purposely naming it after a dark skinned person.
Well ain’t this just grand. We sure don’t want to hurt these lil dumpling’s feelings.
On the other hand, go f7)&k yourselves and leave history alone.
Now that would have meant something to Texans.
Or it should. Hell we got so many stinking yankees moving in our heritage and history is being destroyed.
Secession is the only way.
They also need to change the names forts named of other crappy generals. FT McClellan needs to go. That dirtbag got thousands killed. Antium was a blood bath because of his ineptitude and indecisiveness.
Didn't he serve in Vietnam?
The only reason they named it after Bragg was because he was North Carolina's highest-rated Confederate General.
I'm not bashing the South...I'm bashing the Confederacy. The Confederate States was not some Jeffersonian Democracy- They had a poorly-formed Constitution, didn't have a manufacturing base, and towards the end the Home Guards' actions more closely resembled the SS's during the last days of the 3rd Reich.
He served in Korea and Vietnam and won the Distinguished Service Cross in both, as well as two Silver Stars. By all accounts he had a distinguished career and deserved the promotions he got. They could have done worse.
Fort Shupak or Fort Biggie.
Primary mission was air base defense, at Hahn, Bitburg, and Spangdahlem.
I saw the havoc it wreaked when they force fed women into remote Nike-Hercules batteries, before the site was upgraded for women. Imagine telling Sergeants they had to move back on site, because the facilities weren't suitable for women.
LOL, it affected the air base I was on, as they had the first woman to serve as Base Commander.
During the first tac eval after her promotion, it was business as usual. When an NBC input was announced, I was called to the Eagles Nest to advise the Wing Cdr (why I, an Army 2LT was called for that is another story, from a year previous).
After I gave my "flawless" (LOL) recommendation, I returned to my station. I overhead the Base Cdr question the Wing Cdr, "why is that Army LT involved, we have a Base Disaster Preparedness Officer for those situations."
The Wing Cdr proceeded to rip into her for a couple of minutes, reminding her that he was the Wing Commander. She was gone within 12 months.
