Hood was OK under Lee commanding Texans. Lee politely recommended against giving him a higher job. Joseph Johnston kept retreating towards Atlanta. He had earlier retreated toward Richmond, before getting wounded and was temporarily replaced by Lee, which became permanent. So they put Hood in charge of the remaining Confederate army in the west. He ignored Sherman in Georgia and reinvaded Tennessee and destroyed his army. Seems like sort of a joke to name the base for him to the first place.
However, FU to these sorts of changes.
They should rename Ft. Bragg to Ft. Fredendall, another incompetent General.
And who really GAFF? They weren't named after generals who were good.
Well, as a brigade and division commander he was excellent. But he was not so good leading an entire southern army.
Bragg was a slacker also.
The current state of Free Republic looks like an insurrection to me. Just negative comments now, no old soldiers speaking out. I grew up at Fort Hood Texas, showed up in dippers and grew up watching my friends go to and die in Vietnam. My brother survived, I enlisted in 74 but my brother was still in country so I stayed state side, still pisses me off.
My left side next door neighbors (more military brats) both went Dewy was my brothers age and went first. They called it the draft and eligible military dependents seem to have just showed up first on the list. On the other side of the house were the Browns three brothers and two served in country, Danny (house to the left) was closer to my age and went as well. He told me of the horrors of the last flights out he witnessed. I grew up and lived with the death of my class mates friends. Now you want to change history to meet the needs of your useless woken community. The consideration for OUR history comes first. They also need to change the names forts named of other crappy generals. FT McClellan needs to go. That dirtbag got thousands killed. Antium was a blood bath because of his ineptitude and indecisiveness.

At Atlanta, General Sherman was delighted when he learned that the Confederates had replaced Joe Johnston with John Bell Hood.
