Former President Donald Trump on Friday argued the United States should make it easier to confine "deranged" people and eliminate gun-free school zones after a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers this week at a Texas school.
"Clearly, we need to make it far easier to confine the violent and mentally deranged into mental institutions," Trump said in a speech at a convention in Houston of the National Rifle Association, a gun rights advocacy group.
Tuesday's fatal shooting of 19 pupils and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, by an 18-year-old gunman equipped with an AR-15 style semiautomatic rifle again focused attention on the NRA, a major donor to Congress members, mostly Republicans.
On suggestions to improve the security of schools, Trump said every school should have a single point of entry, strong fencing and metal detectors, adding there should also be a police official or an armed guard at all times in every school.
"This is not a matter of money. This is a matter of will. If the United States has $40 billion to send to Ukraine, we can do this," he said, referring to Washington's financial and military support for Ukraine after Russia's invasion in February.
The former U.S. president also called for eliminating gun-free school zones, adding that such zones leave victims with no means to defend themselves in case of an attack by an armed person.
"As the age-old saying goes, the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," Trump added.

Everyone needs to see this speech. It’s brilliant. A blast of common sense against the ridiculous Left.
School shootings went up almost 300%
A school that has hundreds of students and dozens of teachers should be able to hire a few armed guards. Why do Democrat politicians think they are the only ones that should have armed guards?
The blood is on Xoe BuyDung’s hands.
He painted a bullseye on every American school.
A “gun free zone” is a free killing zone.
The only people who obey ridiculous rules are not the problem in the first place
Major New Research on School Safety: Schools that Allow Teachers to Carry Guns haven’t seen school shootings during school hours

Liberal policies never address the actual problem, ever.
I believe that is the Democrat explanation.
Mr. OPERATION WARP SPEED had 4 years to get that done....
He’s PARTLY right.
Specifically, he’s right to say it should be easier to lock up psychos, but if you want to be able to lock up psychos before they go postal in a spree killing you have to how to know who the psycho is in the first place. Before they tool up and kick off.
The only thing that stands between a spree killer and a spree killing is other people with guns? Really? What’s wrong with the concept that early detection and prevention is better than cure?
Guns in schools, yes. Detection, yes.
But if ya listen to this, then even better.
Seems most high school shooters are severely depressed if not suicidal, and in many cases tell other people what they’re thinking of doing long before they finally do it. In other words they’re basically saying “give me reasons not to do this” and getting a big fat “meh, lol” back.
“Yeah, we thought he was joking” and the bystander principle seem to be a huge problem across the USA. The signs in seriously disturbed kids are often totally obvious in hindsight, but no bugger pays attention to them in the leadups though. Or worse, they know about the leadup and do nothing whatsoever to intervene.
And then, worse still, there’s the encouragement. Social media outlets where trolls keep egging on everything from anorexic purging to suicide. Spectators shouting “do it” to a man on a ledge.
This is a Daily Mail article so normally I’d say beware of propaganda but actually this hits the nail on the head.
Threat and risk assessments, profiling, do make it possible to detect a highly depressed, suicidal emotional shutdown and if you have that AND a growing interest in guns AND fantasies about shooting up the high school, you are practically being given the preventative course of action on a plate.
By the shooter. Who may well be ambivalent about being stopped and may even be saying pretty directly “I’m going to do something REALLY bad and I’m not exactly hiding my thoughts here... So are any of you assholes even listening to me, let alone interested in trying to talk me off this ledge?”
If the signpostss are frequently being gifted to law enforcement, high school counsellors and doctors, and friends on the internet, why not do something a bit joined up to connect the dots before the shooter finally decides that only a bloodstained classroom will convince the world that they were serious all along?
GFSZ was struck down as unconstituional.
United States v. Alfonso D. Lopez, Jr., 514 U.S. 549 (1995)
So Congress passed the law again, after the SCOTUS ruling! That’s the one on the books.
I’m glad he’s sticking to this and not running away like Abbott and Patrick — and who knows who else. Considering the timing it would’ve been easy for him to go wobbly.
In any case, laws favoring either side aren’t going to help. Unless we have a great revival in America this will continue.
At one point there were supposedly about 200 good guys with guns milling about, doing nothing, while children were dying.
He painted a bullseye on every American school.
A “gun free zone” is a free killing zone.
Uh, you are aware that guns are prohibited in schools in Texas because of state law and not federal law, right?
Uh, you are aware that guns are prohibited in schools in Texas because of state law and not federal law, right?
YES, and most of us here in Texas realize that it is “ much better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6”
They don't have to hire them. They already work for them. Texas law allows for districts to have armed and trained teachers and staff. The district just has to allow it. Uvalde did not.
You forgot: "We just need to throw more taxpayer money at it."
I for sure would have teachers packing in elementary school. Maybe middle school also. But high school I hear to many students beating up teachers. The first time a student or students beats up a teacher and takes there gun there will be another possible shooting or out cry from the left.
