Communists are and were anti-Zionists. You are literally watching Neo-Nazi propaganda and lack the basic knowledge to understand it.

“The first semiautomatic assault rifle was the Sturmgehwehr-44...” [MuttTheHoople, post 4]

Assault rifles are by definition selective fire, not semi-auto.

The original definition (which used appear in the DoD dictionary): individual weapon, magazine fed, selective fire, closed-bolt, chambers a cartridge of lesser power than the standard issue rifle.

The first small arm to fit that definition was the AVF-16 (aka Avtomat Fydorova), developed by Fedorov for the Czarist Russian military and adopted in 1916. It saw action in the subsequent Russian Civil War. Chambered 6.5x50SRmm Arisaka, the Imperial Japanese rifle cartridge, it generated far less kinetic energy than the 7.62x54Rmm M1891 Russian cartridge.

And Nazi soldier prized M1 Carbines and used every one they could capture.

“...Interesting to know about the 8mm. Were they ammunition left over from WWI?” kiryandil, post 59]

303 British (7.7x56Rmm) and 8mm Mauser (7.92x57mm) were both adopted in 1888, for the Lee rifle and the Modell 1888 Kommissionsgewehr (Commission Rifle) of Britain and Imperial Germany, respectively.

The Brits used various modifications of the Lee system chambering 303 until 1957. The Germans adopted the Mauser system in 1898 and used modifications chambering 7.92x57mm until 1945. Both nations used various models of machine gun in their respective rifle chamberings during the same periods.

It would be much more accurate to say the M-60 was a design based on the MG-42. But, that is just a pesky factoid in the fantasy world of the media.

The loss ratios say the Germans were very good at what they did. Germans caused more casualties in both offense and defense then they received. What they ran into was numbers both in equipment and men that could absorb the losses.

But the M-16 is chambered in 5.56×45mm NATO and is a fully automatic sub-machinegun but the puny (in comparison) AR-15 is chambered in 223/5.56mm NATO (almost a 22L rifle) and is a semi-automatic (one bullet with a single pull of the trigger).

The Washington Post Devil is in the details that make a vast difference.

Any rifle modified beyond the original specs is no longer an AR-15.   So there's that.

“And Kalishnakov copied it. It became the AK-47,”

Not even close. And handle a 44 and it’s clunky compared to the AK. Other than the intermediate cartridge and the curved magazine it has very little in common. Furthermore there is no evidence Kalashnikov ever saw one.

I sure got that mixed up.

I should have compared it to the Sturmgewehr 44 chambered in 7.92×33mm.

The 7.92 Kurz was new manufacture at the time, but the 8mm Mauser round predated WW1. However, it too continued to be manufactured during WW2.

Of course, that’s not that unusual. At this point the Russian 7.62x54R round has been in mainline top tier military service over 120 years and it doesn’t look to be going away any time soon.

Looks like 32 caliber is the closest analog to 7.92mm (.311 caliber).

303 British held out for a longtime.

Correction the M16 was a development of the AR-15. The Airforce ordered tens of thousands of selective fire AR-15s at this point no civilian could get his hands on one. Early on the Army decided to switch to ball powder as I believe it metered easier that the tube type propellant. This caused higher operating pressures and faster cyclic rate approaching 1,000 rpm, not good with only twenty round mags at the time. We had to replace all the recoil buffers and break the old buffers using a lumping hammer. Did sever thousand of those over a couple of weeks, boring.
Untoward side effects; ball powder burns much dirtier that tube powder. Guess what started to have dirt issues requing cleaning on the order of every four hundred rounds. Bring back the tappet.

This should not be a surprise to anyone. The reason it should not surprise anyone is that the words you and I use are not the same as the words that Democrats, liberals and the anti-gun crowd use.

For example, you and I might know that an AR-15 and an MAK-47 you see at the local gun store are really semiautomatic firearms that look like certain military select fire and fully automatic firearms such as the M4 or M16 US military rifles and the communist AK-47.

Similarly, you and I might know that an AR-15 and an MAK-47 are not weapons of war as they are semiautomatic and no respecting country would equip their troops with such weapons.

Things in my State (the Soviet of Washington) are so screwed up, the liberals have passed a state initiative the legally defines any semiautomatic rifle as an assault weapon. Yes, that 22LR with the tube magazine that you used as a youth in Boy Scout camp, is ow an assault weapon and a weapon of war! Go figure.

So it is of no surprise that the original assault rifle, the Schmeisser’s developed weapon was the Sturmgewehr – originally developed as the MP-43/44 (Maschinenpistole 43/44), is interchangeable in the mind of a liberal with “assault rifle,” “AR-15,” or semiautomatic rifle.

So yes, the Nazi's invented the assault rifle, whatever that is, so they must have invented the AR-15. Poor Mr. Stoner is rolling over in his grave. To the rest of us these liberals are stupid and nuts. To them they are spouting truth (based on made up words they don't understand).
