Secure classroom doors posed challenge in Uvalde shooting response: report

Another issue was the tactical teams were equipped with heavy, cylinder-shaped battering ram agents that are well-suited for breaking through the deadbolt locks on the doors of residential homes — but posed a problem with the classroom doors, according to a current and a former US Customs and Border Protection official who have been briefed on the shooting.

Marcus “Sandy” Wall, a retired member of the Houston SWAT team, told the outlet that breaching the outward-opening doors with steel frames is not efficient because first responders need to pry them open instead of ram through them.

But Curtis S. Lavarello, executive director of the School Safety Advocacy Council, told The Washington Post that authorities do have a way to quickly open the secure doors – which have been added to classrooms across the country.

He insisted that law enforcement should practice those breaches during safety drills – but it is unclear whether that happened in Uvalde.

“It’s mind-boggling to someone with more than 25 years in law enforcement that you’re not entering that room for over an hour,” Lavarello told the paper. “The door opening outward is not a valid excuse for no penetration into that classroom. Saying ‘we can’t get a key’ is foolishness.’”

Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo told The Texas Tribune in an interview that the steel jamb on the classroom door where Ramos opened fire was "impossible" to kick in

One way in/out of the classroom is stupidity.

You were supposed to pry it open, jackass. Strange to be trying to kick a door in that opens OUTWARD.

What a pathetic excuse for a police commander who decided not to carry his radios because it would ‘slow him up.’

Unless I'm missing something, there are some huge, transparent things in the school that someone could shoot through.

Ramos is a boob, but he is correct that an outward opening door with a steel jamb is impossible to “kick in”. But that doesn’t absolve him from responsibility of having an alternative prepared before it was needed.

The whole point of these doors is to prevent them being physically kicked in or shot open by school shooters.

But school security should have other quick and efficient means of rapidly entering them. Whether that’s having rapid access to a master key or some other equipment besides a battering ram, it’s his damn job to know how it’s done, have the equipment available and have practiced it frequently with his officers.

He is incompetent and should be fired with extreme prejudice.

I see two failures here.

1. How did he get into the school?

2. How did he get into a classroom? The doors in this particular building or hard and to the point that no one, short of explosives can get into them. But he managed to find his way into one of the classrooms and lock the door behind him. The police couldn’t breach the doors because they are hardened and reinforced.

Not to mention the Facebook postings he made and the fact that he shot his grandma and the fact that he shot it people at a funeral home before he entered the school etc. etc. etc.

I’m sorry, but every time one of these things happens I can’t help but think that somebody is behind it. How in the hell did this broke ass kid manage to buy two very expensive AR 15s when he worked part time at Wendy’s? Got to break a few eggs to make an omelette folks. They are coming for your guns. Once they get those they can impose their communism. Prove me wrong

Remember, when you build a control point to “keep someone out” it also keeps out:

- Parents
- Police
- SWAT
- Paramedics

I work in the security industry. A few years ago, I was asked to review a school design. After looking it over, I realized that it would be an excellent defensive position from which you could hold off the cops. The designers were not happy with my assessment and I was never asked to review another design.

So how would you build or design a school that controls access without making it impenetrable for LEO or difficult for children to escape?

With such an elite SWAT team the city had you think breaching a door would be super easy.

He also reported trying dozens of keys that failed to work. “Each time I tried a key I was just praying,” Arredondo told the paper.

Shouldn't the keys have had the classroom door numbers on them? Just a thought.

So what happened in the end? He finally found the right key, opened the door, and the Border Patrol officer pushed him aside, walked in the classroom, and shot the killer?

My bank has a normally locked front door. I have to be buzzed in.

As for glass, we use tough glass to build new houses here in Florida.

Steel doors are common.

A selective fire rifle could have weakened the area around the lock. Fired at arms length—and at waist level—could have routed the shooter into the adjacent school room.

Possibly wounded by flying bullet jackets and concrete debris, the shooter might have exited the other door, surrendered, shot himself, or shot dead.

The FBI didn’t take my advice at the Branch Davidian disaster, either.

I wonder if JoAnn remembers my call.
