The Ivy League scolds come for Amy Wax
The Spectator World ^ | July 20, 2022 | Roger Kimball

I have always admired the tag corruptio optima pessima: the corruption of the best is the worst. Take the Ivy League. These super-rich, super-prestigious institutions are so wealthy and so beguiling because, once upon a time, they represented and — more to the point — successfully transmitted to their students the prime civilizational values of our culture.

We’re told, and I have no reason to disbelieve it, that the light we see from distant stars is very old and, in some cases, is light from stars that were long ago extinguished. It is same with the Ivy League and their near competitors.

Today, they are utterly bankrupt — not financially, of course. No, in a good old greedy capitalist sense, they are filthy, stinking rich. It is only in an intellectual and moral sense that they are bankrupt. They are, all of them, totally in thrall to what we have come to call “woke” ideology, which has poisoned the well of their intellectual pretensions by subordinating the life of the mind to identity politics.

All the old liberal virtues — disinterested inquiry, due process, colorblind justice, advance according to merit, not some extraneous racial, ethnic, or sexual quota — all that has been rebranded as the invidious patent of reactionary and therefore impermissible vice. In sum, the educational establishment in its highest reaches is today a cesspool, contaminating the society it had been, at great expense, created to nurture.

***

… A frenetic restlessness in that bedlam suggests that the end will be coming soon. What cannot go on forever won’t, and the very public nervous breakdown of these tony institutions is now too far advanced to be swept under the carpet.

The article is about the ongoing process of excommunication of Professor Wax from the holy precincts of academia.

As usual, Wikipedia's entry on Professor Wax is egregious:

Amy Laura Wax (born January 19, 1953)[1] is an American lawyer, neurologist, and academic. She is the Robert Mundheim Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Her work addresses issues in social welfare law and policy, as well as the relationship of the family, the workplace, and labor markets. She has often made remarks, about non-white people, described as white supremacist and racist.

There was a Penn undergrad who got away with calling them "water buffaloes." He shouted it from a dorm window over a crowd of hundreds of "non-white people."

University tried to kick him out, convened "Judicial Board" meetings against him.

He got a lawyer, and they backed down. Nothing happened. He stayed.

About fifty years ago most “elite” universities abandoned the meritocracy to embrace “equity. inclusiveness and diversity”. It meant of course the ultimate loss of free speech, open inquiry, scholarship and the restraint of “whites”. American nationalism and heritage were also incompatible with the new order. Those whites who could not adapt to the new reality and participate with the indoctrination programs in all subjects would not be tolerated.

The time has come for any taxpayer financial support to these private or public institutions to cease. Defund them now to save the country. I

Leftists only hire leftists, so once there is a ‘critical mass’ of leftists in an institution leftism will become and remain entrenched. This is what has happened to too many universities.

Yes, the Dunning-Kruger Death Spiral.

“He got a lawyer, and they backed down. Nothing happened. He stayed. ”

I remember that. They assembled an elite research panel who were unable to find a racial angle to the admonition. The one who proclaimed the crowd to be water buffaloes was a non-white foreign exchange student who didn’t know that any insult directed towards blacks is first assumed to be racist.

corruptio optimi pessima

corruptio optima pessima = “the best corruption is the worst.”
At a stretch it could be “the worst corruption is the best.”

optimi - masculine genitive singular

“She has often made remarks, about non-white people, described as white supremacist and racist.”

Any English professor (or Wikipedia editor) worth their salt would have red circled that sentence and asked “described by whom???”

Thanks. The original phrase with “optima” made no sense.

Those whites, who could not adapt to the new reality and participate with the indoctrination programs in all subjects would not be tolerated.”

The Woke B$ from the Great Society from the late 1960’s and the early 70’s flowed downhill from the Ivy League schools, GW, Georgetown, Notre Dame and Purdue, Stanford and USC and into the business world ruled and controlled by the elite alumni of those schools.

As this article pointed out:

“Take the Ivy League. Those super-rich, super-prestigious institutions are so wealthy and so beguiling because, once upon a time, they represented and — more to the point — successfully transmitted to their students the prime civilizational values of our culture.

Today, the elites are utterly bankrupt — not financially, of course. No, but in a good old greedy capitalist sense.

Our elites are filthy, stinking rich. It is only in an intellectual and moral sense that they are bankrupt.

They are, all of them, totally in thrall/all to what we have come to call “woke” ideology. Being Woke has poisoned the wells of their intellectual pretensions by subordinating the life of the mind to identity politics.

Anthropology has turned its back on its legacy.

All the old liberal virtues — disinterested inquiry, due process, colorblind justice, advance according to merit, not some extraneous racial, ethnic, or sexual quota — all that has been rebranded as the invidious patent of reactionary and therefore impermissible vice.

In sum, the educational establishment in its highest reaches is today a cesspool, contaminating the society it had been, at great expense, created to nurture.”

Since, B$ rolls downhill, many of our corporations, universities and our military, started America down on that road to being “woke” re our corporations, universities, military.

Our country is at the point, where, we may not be able to correct our downward Woke plunge since the late 1960s to today.

Colson wrote of the Ivy League’s decadence a generation ago.

It takes time for people to recognize that their institution has become a cartoon zombie.

That word does have a distinct unhappy ring to it. Applies well to the last 2 years.
