Western Japan volcano, Sakurajima, erupts; alert level raised
The Washington Post ^ | July 24, 2022 | Sammy Westfall

A volcano in western Japan erupted on Sunday evening, sending a large plume of black smoke into the sky and spewing rocks.

The volcano, named Sakurajima, is located on the southwestern island of Kyushu, about 600 miles from Tokyo. It’s one of the Japan’s most active volcanoes. Are you on Telegram? Subscribe to our channel for the latest updates on Russia's war in Ukraine.

The Japan Meteorological Agency raised the volcanic alert from level 3 to level 5 — the highest alert level, which has only been seen once before in 2015 for a different volcano, the Japan Times reported.

Based on analysis of data points including seismic activity and crustal movements, the agency later said that a large-scale eruption was not imminent on Sakurajima.

The volcano erupted Sunday at about 8:05 p.m. local time, according to the meteorological agency. Videos of the eruption show bright orange lava spurting from the volcano. The agency asked residents to be cautious against pyroclastic flows — a hot and mobile mixture of rock, gas and ash — within about 1.2 miles of the site.

look at home that plume blackens the sky. volcanos are the earth's natural cooling system. all we need are a few big explosions and you can say buh-bye to global warming.

When Mt. Pinatubo erupted back in 1991, there quickly appeared stories that “warned” that would probably be “a pause” in global warming as a result of the millions of tons of ash and particulates were being injected into the atmosphere.

When Mount Rainier erupts there is a good chance it will wipe out Seattle. What a natural disaster that would be for the state of Washington.

Sakurajima is always spewing some level of ash. Lava flows probably aren’t too uncommon either.

The prevailing winds mostly blow from the ocean towards Rainier so the ash fall will be to the west of the mountain.

Seattle will dodge that bullet.

It was spewing ash when I visited Kagoshima on business twenty five years ago. Very exotic.

Do you mean... east of the mountain ?

Exactly. It will blow east, hopefully. I can see Mt. Rainer from my back yard. If it blows big time, I will sit on the roof of my house and kiss my ass goodbye. No getting away from it if it’s big. The Puyallup valley will be totally wiped out. They have warning sirens all up and down the valley. Won’t do a damn bit of good with the amount of traffic out here. Sitting ducks, all of us.

Zags will have to play every game on the road when that happens. Spokane went through this during Mt. St. Helens.

I wonder if the Chinese have thought about dropping a 50 mega ton bomb into the Yellowstone caldera.

I was 16 when St. Helens blew. My husband (not at the time) had just had his 67 Camaro painted, and it got a nice fine dusting of volcanic ash on that new paint job. I wasn’t in the picture at the time, but knowing him now I can imagine how pissed he was! That will be the least of anyone’s worries if Rainer blows.
