It kind of makes the concept of carbon offsets meaningless, doesn't it?

If I was to live in Japan I’d choose Kyushu.

We are 240 miles ENE of Mt Rainier and the prevailing winds blow toward us.

Honestly, I think about moving. Politics aside, you really do not want to be down wind of a major volcano. After it blows, you can’t sell.

Nah, it’s too beautiful here, it’s a very conservative area, and has the best people. This area got hit with quite a bit of ash from Mt. St. Helens and recovered quickly. Of course, an inch of ash is a lot different than feet of ash.

My time there was limited to visiting contractors in Fukuoka, Kumamoto and Kagoshima, and I wasn’t there too often. Anyway aside from the natural beauty of the place - tropical compared to the rest of Japan and with volcanos dotting the landscape it felt primordial - it struck me as more traditional there, kind of akin to flyover country here. Thats the best way I can think of the describe it.

But I don’t want to land in New York City
Don’t want to land in Mexico (no no no)
Don’t want to land on no Three Mile Island
Don’t want to see my skin aglow (no no no)

Come this September I will have lived 37 years in Japan : 10 in the Tokyo area ; 21 in the mountains of Aso county where , yes , there is Mt. Aso an active volcano , and 6 years in our new house here in Kumamoto City . I was destined to live , and die , in Japan . I really believe that . It’s been one heck of an enjoyable ride for the most part . Our only child - a daughter - and her husband are both high school teachers in Kumamoto Prefecture so they’ve got it made in the shade . As mentioned in another post , she gave birth to a boy last August .

It takes a certain type of westerner to actually live there, IMO. I really liked the place but I could only stay for so long before coming home to recharge.
